    In September 2006 an ad hoc group of individuals made up of several government departments (Federal, Provincial & Municipal), NGO's including Harbour Authorities & fishermen's associations, commercial fishermen and other stakeholders got together to address the marine waste problems associated with the commercial fishing industry.

    MFU - Clean Oceans Webpage At the request of the Marine Waste Management Committee the MFU votes to relaunch their Ship-to-Shore - Trash Kills campaign of the early 1990's. It is launched under a new title "Clean Oceans".

    Webpage - Clean Nova Scotia - Ship-toShore - Addressing Fishing Industry Waste Management Clean Nova Scotia made a formal request to the MFU to utilize the "Ship-to-Shore" brand. The purpose is to again encourage fishermen to bring all of their waste back to shore for proper sorting, recycling and disposal. The MFU agreed to the request and completely supports Clean Nova Scotia in this project.

    MFU Clean Oceans Initiative Honoured with Environmental Award
    The Maritime Fishermen’s Union’s Clean Oceans initiative has been recognized by the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. The Gulf of Maine Visionary Award was granted to the MFU on December 10th in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for its work to reduce marine debris.

    Environmental Award
    The Harbour Authority received the national award, under the category of Environmental Stewardship, for successfully improving waste management in the fishing industry and encouraging fishers to bring waste ashore and recycle. Clean Nova Scotia and the Small Craft Harbours Program also participated in the pilot project.
