Yalta Conference
Churchill , Roosevelt, and Stalin meet in Yalta Crimea Ukraine, to discuss how to reorganize Europe after WW 2. This was the 2nd of 3 conferences (first was in Tehran in 1943). Conference set terms for Germany , ideas for setting up United Nations, and agreement to defeat Japan. Nazi war criminals were to be put on trial. US and Soviet expansionism. -
Stalin Death
Stalin had policy of "Never again will be invaded." He was part of original Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. His death end an era. During his president 20-30 million people died because of his policies. In 1953 over ten million people in the gulags & forced labour camps. (Canada's population in 1953 was about 10,000,000.) His death was an opportunity for the US to have detente or to take advantage and expand its influence further. After Stalin's death the Cold War got colder. -

Military alliance of Eastern European countries under he leadership of the USSR to oppose the existence of NATO that was established in 1949.
