Truman Doctrine
President Harry S. Truman gave a speech on March 12th 1947 that would forever change the relationship between the Unites States and the Soviet Union. His Doctrine established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under the threat of outside or inside authoritarian forces. Mr. Truman gave this speech in front of a joint congress in hopes of rallying nations that were under attack by supporters of communism. -

The landing of Sputnik on the moon came as a Surprise to many Americans. Sputnik was the first man-made object to be placed into Earth’s orbit. In response to the Soviets, the U.S. Army launched its own satellite, Explorer l. U2 Spy Invasion
Francis Gary Powers was convicted in May 1960 after being captured for flying planes in Soviet air space. For several years the CIA had been flying planes on spy missions to gain an edge over the Soviets. Pictures were taken by the planes to reveal the capabilities of the less advanced nuclear weapons. In an attempt to save his butt, Eisenhower insisted it was a weather plane that had flown off course. This incident happened right before a conference between the two leaders leading to trouble. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
Just 90 miles south of the US boarders, Cuba stood with nuclear weapons on their island. A 13 day political standoff began on October 22nd 1962 after discovering missiles that belonged to the USSR. The shocking news made Americans fear the world was on the brink of nuclear war. This disaster was avoided when the U.S. and Soviets agreed to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. to not invade Cuba. The crisis also involved a blockade around the island in order to stop Soviets. -
