The Potsdam Conference
From July 17 to August 2, 1945, Allied leaders gathered to demand the surrender of Japan and set up a framework for postwar Europe. Each leader was trying to get the strongest position and the most influence for his own country, but the countries fell into two camps. The Potsdam Conference set up a competition between capitalist Western powers (the United States and Great Britain) and the communist-controlled Soviet Union. This rivalry grew into the Cold War. -
NATO/Warsaw Pact
In NATO There was an alliance between the united states and on April 4,1949 countries had made the choice to sign, the north atlantic treaty in washington, the countries that were aligned in this alliance were Belgium,Canada,Denmark,France,Iceland,Italy,Luxembourg,Netherlands,Norway,
Portugal, United Kingdom(Great Britain) and the United states. This happened because In 1955 the soviet union wanted to establish a stronger alliance. -
Korean War
From June 1950 to July 1953, Korea tried to take over South korea because they thought that they were better than them and that they each deserved and wanted their own territory.Most countries were a little frightened and scared by this because it was the first major battle over communism and they knew that if it continued it would spread to other countries like the United States when the war happened the united states and thought that the war would get so bad that they sent troops. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam war started to happen in 1954 and what happened was ¨North Vietnam wanted to reunite the country under communism, South Korea fought it from happening .1.3 million vietnamese and about 58,000 U.s. troops were killed. This happened because they thought that it was time for change, but the vietnam had already had trouble before the war in the end of the war the viet minh got control of north korea and the french got control of south korea -
Suez Crisis
On July 26th 1956, Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the suez canal which was a way to to travel place to place in Africa without having to go all the way around the canal was controlled by the french and british, this occurred because egypt promised to pay for the dams construction of the dam within five years but britain and france didnt really know if it was going to happen. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
On october 22 1962, “The soviet union engaged in a tense political military standoff.” It was a bad situation for most countries but the main country that was in trouble was the united states, and at the time John F. Kennedy was the president.The reason this happened was because there was a threat received to the national security of the united states,it effected alot of people because they thought that the world was on the brink of nuclear war, and if that happened it would end in a disaster. -
Glastnost/Perestroika
In the late 1980’s the russians needed to form something so that everyone could have there there own opinions in different situations so they came up with a method called Glastnost it was a way to discuss public and political issues in a more settle way and the perestroika was a way to restructure things that were going on in russia as far as small businesses and voters could choose their candidates with non communist.
