    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was a foregin policy created by the Americans in order to prevent and stop the imperialism of the Soviets. To be more specific, president Harry S. Truman put this policy into play. The doctrine stated political, military, and economic aid and assistance would be granted by the United States to every democratic nation that was at a state of being threatened. This doctrine was created and established because Truman wanted to protect the middle east and Turkey from communism.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was an effort by the American side to provide aid to Western Europe. After the end of the world war, the United States gave a fund of about $130 billion dollars to Europe. The U.S. wanted to rebuild Europe again and take away the trade barriers present at the time. Although the United States wanted to help out Europe by providing all of this assistance, one of the main reasons for them helping out the Europeans was in fear that they would convert to being a communist country.

    The Korean War
    The Korean War between two main sides, consisting of multiple countries and powers. The United Nations, United States, and the Southern Vietnamese against the North Vietnamese, who were assisted by China and the Soviet Union. The United States and U.N. were helping South Vietnam to prevent the spread of communism. This tactic is known as containment, which was used by the American side all through out the Cold War. North vietnam and South Vietnam were seperated by the 38th parallel.

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    The Rosenberg Spy Case involved two people by the names of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were convicted of treason in the year of 1953. After Communist, Julius Rosenberg, was fired from his government position, he asked a man by the name of David Greenglass to pass on information to the Soviet Union about the atomic bomb. A man working with Greenglass named Harry Gold was the individual who personally passed on the top secert information. The Rosenbergs were later sentenced to death.

    Soviets launches Sputnik
    In 1957, the Soviet Union launched a satellite named the Sputnik in outer space. This event is significant to the Cold War due to the arms race. The United States and the Soviet Union have always been in competition with eachother and have tried to beat one another to reach outer space. This was an example of competition of technology between the two countries. U.S, president Dwight D. Eisenhower was blamed for the set back and aspect of being "behind" the communists in regards to technology.

    U-2 Spy Plane Controversy
    In the U-2 spy plane controversy, an American spy plane was flying over the Soviet Union until it was shot down by the Soviets. The United States pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was instructed by the C.I.A. to fly over the Soviet Union and commit espionage. The U-2 spy plane had state of the art technology, including a high resolution camera. The plane was eventually shot down and the pilot was captured, along with the plane. President Eiesenhower later had to admit ] that the U.S had been spying.

    The Berlin Wall Goes Up
    On August 13, 1961, the Germans built a stone wall, seperating east and west Germany. Barbed wire and soldiers protected the wall, making sure that there were no tresspassers. The significance of the Berlin Wall is the fact that no one could flee from East Germany to West Germany. However, the people of West Germany could go to East Germany. This was so then the Soviets could adopt communism. The spread of communism was a big factor and issue at this time for many countries.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    John F. Kennedy discovered that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro had missles stationed in Cuba, aimed at the United States. The Soviet Union was supplying Cuba with these nuclear weapons and soldiers too. Kennedy's government co-workers and officials wanted to attack Cuba while Kennedy had a different thought of approach. He wanted to create a blockade as a result. Cuba and the Soviet Union agreed that they would remove the missles if the U.S. didn't attack Cuba. Both countries were communist also.
