  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    The idea to block Germany and Berlin into occupation zones came from the Yalta Conference. This gave the Communists the idea to block off parts of West Germany in order to try and starve them into submission. This was working until the Berlin Airlifts began.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    With the Berlin Blockade up, the people within the affected area needed food and other supplies. Many countries came to the aid of Berlin such as Britain, France, and the United States.
  • Formation of NATO

    Formation of NATO
    NATO which is short for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was a formation of the United States and 11 other Western Nation. It was made in an attempt to preserve peace in the world by agreeing that should one of NATO's members be attacked, they would all attack the aggressor.
  • National Security Council Report (NSC-68)

    National Security Council Report (NSC-68)
    The NSC-68 was 58 page top-secret policy paper by the United States National Security Council presented to President Truman. It was one of the most important statements of American policy that launched the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The war began when North Korea had invaded South Korea. The U.S took the side of South Korea and China with the Soviet Union took the side of North Korea as soon as word of the war spread. The war constantly saw a back and forth constantly occurring across the line known as the 38th Parallel.
  • President Truman fires General MacArthur

    President Truman fires General MacArthur
    On the day of Truman firing General MacArthur, Truman made public statements contradicting the administration´s policies. MacArthur appeared to be a brilliant general leading several successful missions, however the public statements MacArthur made became increasingly irritating to Truman; it was only a certain amount of time before Truman relieved MacArthur.

    With the formation of NATO, it was inevitable that Warsaw Pact would be formed with the Communist countries in the world. The two organizations provided the framework for Cold War to begin and last as long as it did.
  • The Launch of Sputnik

    The Launch of Sputnik
    The launch of the Sputnik 1 commenced the Soviet Union and the United States into the infamous Space Race. The Sputnik reached space and was able to send down signals that even amateur radio operators could pick up.
  • End of the Chinese Civil War

    End of the Chinese Civil War
    The war was between the traditional Republic of China´s government, against the Communist forces. It resulted in Communist forces taking control in China and new leaders rising to power in the new Communist China.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    A 13 day confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States. This is known as one of the closest moments in the entirety of the Cold War that the world was almost thrown into a full-scale nuclear war. Only one person was killed through the entire 13 days.
