    Gouzenko Affair
    Gouzenko was a clerk at the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. He exposed a Soviet spy ring in Canada in 1945, 18 people were arrested with 8 eventually convicted of spying.

    The first Atomic Bomb was dropped August 6th, 1945, on Hiroshima, another bomb was dropped 3 days later on Nagasaki. On August 10th, the Japanese surrenderd. Canada was not directly involved with the atomic bomb, but they were involved with fighting the Japanese.

    Formation of the United Nation
    The United Nations formed after WWII on October 24, 1945. Canada was a participant at the San Francisco Conference in April 25 to June 26, 1945, and is one of the founding members of the United Nations. They mainly focused on 3 points, comdemnation, sanctions, and military.

    NATO was created April 4th, 1949. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) is a military alliance of Western nations set up in opposition to the Soviets in 1949. Canada had to make military commitments to NATO and had Canadian soldiers permanently stationed in Europe in a state of war readiness. All members agreed that nuclear weapons could e used if necessary in war against Soviets,
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean war started June 25th, 1950 and ended July 27th, 1953. It was the UN's attempt to reunite the country but failed, North Korea attacked South Korea, Canada sent in 27,000 soldiers to fight Korea. By the end we had, 516 killed and over 1000 wounded.

    Vietnam started November 1st, 1955 and ended on April 30th 1975. The resulted of nearly 60,000 American deaths, and nearly 2 millian Vietnam deaths. Close to 30,000 Canadians volunteered to fight in Southeast Asia, and we were also involved in secret missions weapon testing, and arms production.

    The Suez Crisis was an owned by France and Britian and when Egypt decided to take, the responded by attacking Egypt..
    6000 soldiers were sent ot Egypt, 100 of them were Canadian, also the E force would not fight, rather it would observe, investigate, mediate, and report back to the UN General Assembly.

    NORAD started September 12th, 1957. Joined Canadian and American fighter, missile and radar units under one command center, in a mountain in Colorado, to protect from a Soviet attack.
  • The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow

    The Avro Arrow was intrduced on October 4th, 1957 and on February 20th, 1959 the Avro arrow was cancelled. Canada was forced to develop the arrow’s engine and fire control, it cost $12.5 million. After many attempts of failure, the project was cancelled and Roe fired 14,000 employees.

    The Cuabn Missile Crisis started October 14th, 1962 and ended October 28, 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day stand off between the US and USSR. Kennedy quarantines Cuba by imposing a naval blaockade around the island. A nuclear cataclysm also had profound implications for Canada, since many of the missiles in Cuba could reach Canadian.

    On May 26, 1972 Nixon and Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev signed the ABM Treaty and interimSALT agreement. It was the first time during the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union had agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals.

    The Strategic Defense Initavite started in March 23, 1983. It was also known as Star Wars, a program initiated under Presisdent Ronald Reagen. The intent of this program was to develop a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union.

    The Berlin wall was built in August 13, 1961 and fell on November 9th, 1989. The Berlin Wall fell when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased.
