  • United Nations Formed

    The United Nations was formed in San Francisco after the charter was ratified. China, France, the UK, the USA, and Russia are the main members of the UN. The UN was established to support peace amongst the nations.
  • Korean war

    North Korea Invaded South Korea along the 38th Parallel. After two months of war, South Korea was nearly defeated.
    Seoul is captured in January but quickly after the communist forces are pushed back and eventually sign an armistice.
  • Berlin Walls go up

    The Berlin Wall was erected to divide East and West Berlin and to stop people from escaping from the East to the West. Towers and guard dogs were placed along the wall to further prevent any escapes. Soldiers were given orders to shoot anyone attempting to escape.
  • U.S. enters Vietnam

    U.S. Marines enter Vietnam on the shores of Da Nang without notifying the South Vietnamese government. The first major operation carried out was Operation Starlite on August 18th. Vietnam was a particularly harrowing war due to the unfamiliar junglescape and the North Vietnamese ability to adapt and knowledge of the surrounding environment.
  • Soviets invade Afghanistan

    The Soviets sent in 30,000 troops to secure Afghanistan and place their leader in power. Their leader Babrak Karmal was unpopular and was overshadowed by the U.S.-backed Mujahideen rebellion. Russia initially left the war in Afghanistan to a stalemate with the local army but eventually lost their control in 1982.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall

    November 9th marks the date travel was allowed between east and west Berlin with some regulations still in place. The destruction of the wall further weakened the stability of Germanys' eastern government. a full reuniting of the two sides of Germany occurred on October 3rd, 1990.
