The Hyrdogen bomb was tested and created back in the late 40's after the U.S.S.R dropped a atomic bomb in 1949. After this happened Harry S. Truman ordered to make the Hydrogen bomb. It was created by some polish scientists and was tested in the Marhsell islands and had a 3 mile wide blast radius. -
Soviet Launch Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched the first satellite in the late 50's. It was the size of a beach ball and around 98 minutes to complete one oribit around the Earth. This caught the U.S off guard because they had never had something like this happen. It was the spark of the space race inbetween the U.S and the Soviets. -

Fidel Castro came into as the Prime Minister in 1959. He later became president and he empahized many social projects. He improved living conditions, nationlized health care, and improved education. He created a better infrostructre and built homes and roads. After a few back an forth arguments between him and the U.S this led to the missle crisis and the bay of pigs invasion. -
U-2 Spy plane Controversy
This was an event where the Soviets thought we were spying on them durning the cold war. The U-2 plane was flying over airspace and it got shot down by the Soviets. The pilot Francis Powers parachuted to the ground and was captured by Soviet Forces. The U.S tried to cover up the incident by lieing to the Soviets but were forced to tell the truth. Francis was convicted but at a later date we did a prisoner exchange. -
Oplympic Basketball game 1972
This was controversial basketball games in Oplympic history. The game was held durning the cold war and the U.S has won gold medals in basketball every year since the 30's. The game came down to the last secnds and the Soviets won by a buzzer beater by one point. The U.S thought the shot was legitimate and thought the U.S should have won. -
U.S invades Grenada
The U.S invaded Grenada to recover the missles that the Soviets had been put there. Grenada is a small island in the Caribbean islands. The U.S gained control of Grenada and killed the leader in a matter of weeks. We set up a interim government and democratic elections followed soon after. This was one of this first things that set up the Vietnam war.
