    CONTAINMENT POLICY
    The idea of the containment policy was introduced by George Keenan and he had hopes of stopping the spread of communism throughout Europe. The reason it was introduced was because Greece and Turkey (part of the NATO) were threatened by the Soviets. 400 million dollars were poured into saving Greece and Turkey by the U.S. as an order from Truman. The containment policy was officiated in the Febuary of 1947. Due to retaliation and this policy tensions would rise and remain very high until 1951.

    NATO AGREEMENT
    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, it was an alliance between all western superpowers, it was created at the height of tensions in the cold war as war between Russia and the U.S. seemed very likely. The NATO pact consisted of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Later on it welcomed Greece, Turkey, West Germany and Spain.

    CHINA BECOMES COMMUNIST
    The communist party was created in China was created due to the leaders of the country wanted a united country. It was an attempt to make China a communist state where peasants owned the farms industries and business. Movements began in 1919 but a party was formed in 1924. The Chinese revolution begun in 1949. The leader of the party was Mao Zedong and he created a policy called "The Great Leap Forward" which was an effort to boost agricultural output. It ended a massive famine killing millions.

    KOREAN WAR
    June 25 1950 saw the beginning of 3 year long war in Korea it begun because North Korea were democratic and South Korea was communist. The war resulted in the death of 5 million people. The war officially begun because the soviets ordered/advised the South to invade the North this brought the US into the war Then communist China sided with the North. With the conclusion of the war after 3 years there was no clear outcome with the North and South still separated and remain separated to this day.

    CIA VS KGB
    The CIA is the American Central Intelligence Agency and the KGB is the Russian equivalent. The CIA was created on 26 July 1947, when Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act into law. The U.S.S.R responded to this act in the March of 1954 This organization was originally designed to be a state security committee and was attached to the Council of Ministers. The KGB used terror to enforce law an recruit agents overseas. The CIA still stands to where as the KGB was abolished in 1991.

    WARSAW PACT
    The Warsaw pact played a big roll in the cold war and it was in retaliation to the NATO agreement. The NATO agreement was a pact between all the western superpowers, the Russians wanted NATO to be abolished as they feared their wealth, power, military. Instead of abolishing NATO the U.S.S.R made their own pact (the Warsaw pact) with Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. The aim of the pact was to control West Germany and Berlin and remain equal with NATO.

    BERLIN WALL
    The Berlin wall was a barricade that separated east and west Berlin during the cold war. It lasted for 1961 to 1989, roughly the length of the cold war between the U.S and the U.S.S.R.. The wall was built to separate east Berlin citizens from the west, as east was communist and the west democratic. Guards and sentries were all the way along the whole wall, shooting anyone who attempted to jump over or even get to close. The only people who were allowed to cross over were foreigners for 24 hours.
  • DÉNTENTE

    DÉNTENTE
    In 1969 during high tensions between the U.S.A and the U.S.S.R President Nixon introduced Détente which was an agreement and eased a lot of the tension between the two countries. It was the beginning of the end of the cold war. One of the positives that came out of Détente was the Strategic Arms Limitation Talk(SALT) treaty. It was created to limit the amount of Nuclear weapons that were being produced by both countries. This further eased tension which was a step forward in ending the cold war.
