Soviets Create & Test Atomic Bomb
America sent fear through other nations both big and small after displaying twice the emmence power that we had when it came to global warefare. After dropping two atomic bombs on Japan in order to end the war in Asia, other worldwide superpowers raced to catch up to the United States in fear that they would be blown off the face of the earth. This moment, led to the beginning

of the roaring Arms Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. On September 3, a U.S. spy plane flying off the coast of Siberia had detected evidence of radioactivity from the atomic bomb testing and three months later, Klaus Fuchs, the German-born physicist that helped the U.S. build their first atomic bomb, was arrested for leaking secrets on the nuclear bomb to the Soviets. This series of events led to Truman's decision to begin the devolopment of the hydrogen bomb. This event is

This event is very significant when it came to the Cold War, as it arguably started the arms race between the two nations. This event occured three years before the United States' devolpment of the hydrogen bomb, as it was the first key event in a series of powerful creations that constantly put the world on brinkmanship of being whiped off of the earth due to nuclear warefare.

U.S. Creates & Tests the Hydrogen Bomb
The United States first test of the hydrogen bomb was simply known as just the next step in the cold war arms race. The second event in the arms race started when the United States detonated the first thermonuclear weopon that the world had ever seen. This test gave the United States a large, yet short lived, advantage in the arms race just three years after the Sotivet Union detonated an atomic bomb of their own. The United States massively accelerated their nuclear program to help develop a

a thermonuclear bomb that was approximately 1,000 times more powerful than the conventional nuclear devices that the world had become so accustomed to. People who opposed the hydrogen bomb argued that little would be accomplished except simply speeding up the arms race, since many assumed that the Soviet Union would adapt not too soon after. This event was also very important when it came to the importance of the cold war for many different reasons. It accelerated the process of the arms race

  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro launched his army into Havana and overthrew the American-backed president, Fulgencio Batista. For the next several years, the CIA attempted to push Castro out of power, when finally, in April 1961, the CIA launched an invasion on Cuba using 1,400 American-trained Cubans who had fled their homes when Castro took over. On April 17th, the invasion began on an isolated spot of Cuba, known as the Bay of Pigs, but almost immediatly resulted in disaster. Coral reefs

sank multiple ships as they pulled into the shore and paratroopers landed in the wrong place and before long, the invaders were pinned, resulting in 114 killed and over 1,100 taken prisoner. The United States broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba and then refused to import their sugar, but the Soviets stepped in, and helped Castro by buying the sugar and backing Castro.

    Bay of Pigs pt. 3
The Bay of Pigs invasion on Cuba was very significant when it came to the Cold War because it introduced a new threat to the United States. President JFK didn't want to abandon Cuba and let them become communist, but he was afraid that if he intervened, he could possibly start World War III. The Cuban missle crisis that came from this further advanced the tensions between America, Cuba, and the Soviets.

  • SALT Agreements Signed

    SALT Agreements Signed
Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev and U.S. President Richard Nixon met in Moscow, Russia to sign the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks agreements, which at the time, was the best, yet most far-reaching attempts to try and control nuclear weopons. The Soviets were occupied with China after a "war of words" exploded into disputes while the United States were also involved in the war in Vietnam. Nixon needed a way to take the public's mind off the fact that in his 4 yeara as president, he hadn't

brought an end to the conflict in Vietnam. The SALT agreements were signed after about two-and-a-half-years of slow progress. The agreements limited the number of antiballistic missile sites the two countries could have to two, while aslo freezing the number of intercontinetal ballistic missiles and submarine-launced missles. This was very significant in the cold war because it was an unexpected victory for both nations, while it also became the "foundation for all arms limitations talks.

    1972 Basketball Game
The 1972 Olympic men's basketball final is one of the most controversial in Olympic history and was Team USA's first ever loss since the Olympic sport began. The team very easily won its first eight games of the tournament and set up a gold medal final against the Soviet Union. In the final, the Soviet team led the game until the final seconds when American guard Doug Collins stole a pass and was fouled as he drove towards the basket, which led to two free throws. He made both of them to put the

U.S. up by one. The Russian coach tried to get a timeout but was not given one as it was against the rules due to the action going on in the game. With three seconds left on the clock, the Soviets ran up to half court and called a timeout with one second left. After some confusion from the refs, mulitple misunderstandings, and some cheating from the soviets, they won the game on a last second basket, which defeated the United States team.

This event wasn't as significant in the Cold War struggle as anything military, but it only added to the growing tension. The United States team and coaches refused to take their silver medals and protested the game multiple times, but were all rejected because the panal of judges on the case were mostly made up of communist countries.

  • Miracle on Ice

    Miracle on Ice
The 1980 Olympic hockey game between the Soviets and the United States was arguably one of the greatest upsets in sports history. The Soviet hockey team was arguably the most dominant of all international hockey at the time and had won four straight gold medals while almost defeating Canada's top pro players. Many countries protested the Soviet hockey team because many of them were memebers of the Red Army, while the government allowed them to play hockey at the same time as retaining the

amateur status. This strategy, called 'professional amateurism", sparked controversy, but no rules were changed in place of this. Few people world-wide expected the United States to even have a chance in the game nick-named the "Miracle on Ice". The Americans scored two goals midway through the third period to take the lead and held on from there.

    Miracle on Ice pt. 3
The "Miracle on Ice" game happened when the United States was suffereing through high unemployment, huge inflation, and the Iran Hostage Crisis. The Soviets had also invaded Afghanistan, but the hockey game victory gave the American people hope that they could be competetive in the Olympics for years to come.
