    The Yalta conference was the conference that decided the splitting up of Europe. This conference established the battlefield for the Cold War.

    Harry S. Truman Is In Power

    During Harry S. Truman's presidency is where the cold war started. He issued the Truman doctrine to dispense funds and forces to European nations. He also decided to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, showing American power and how devastating it can be, clearing away the ground for the Cold War.
  • Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima

    Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima
    The bombing of Hiroshima ended the war with axis but blazed the trail (literally and figuratively) for a new war to come about. An era controlled by fear of global destruction known as the Cold War.

    The Marshal Plan was an act that gave money and forces to nations in eastern Europe. This was done to make sure that they did not turn communist or were invaded. Many Soviets took it as an act to invade other countries by placing soldiers in those countries that would soon turn on them countries, and took it as an aggressive act.

    The Berlin blockade marked mounting tension and a stronger grip on the other countries within the Soviet Union and even areas it does not have, such as Berlin. It also shows that the allies would not give up easily and they would stick up for their territory.

    The Soviet union spied on the Manhattan project and obtained the technology of the nuclear bomb. They then made and tested it. This both shocked the U.S. because they never expected the Soviet Union to have obtained nuclear technology so quickly, and it sprouted the fear of global nuclear apocalypse if nothing was done.

    Mao Zedong was the person who caused the Chinese Communist revolution. He created another of what America thought of as a threat and ended up being the leader that opened the path of trade with America and closed off Vietnam

    The Suez Canal Crisis

    The Suez canal crisis was a time when tensions rose within NATO and it resulted in battles within it. Egypt had taken Britain and France's political power in Egypt along with the Suez Canal Company. Britain, France and Israel started having war meetings against Egypt, Israel joined in because it felt that it's security was threatened. They created a plan to invade Egypt and overthrow the President. The US created a peacekeeping force and stopped the fight. This soured relations for a short time.

    Nikita Krushchev was a very important Soviet leader that was in power during the Cuban missile crisis and was in charge of the whole Soviet side of it. An extremely important time because it is the time where both sides would potentially die with another leader in power. He also arranged Detente, which was made to release some tension and stop the Cold war. Although that was short lived, it was still a contribution.

    The Hungary Rebellion
    The Hungary rebellion was a rebellion against the Soviet Union in Hungary. They protested sixteen demands, such as more food and removal of Soviet control. They were not given these demands and they then announced that they were withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact. This then resulted in hundreds of tanks entering Hungary and snuffing out the rebellion, even hanging the bodies of who challenged them or kept protesting on their tanks as warning to other protesters. This resulted in 30,000 deaths.

    U-2 Spy Incident
    Spy and pilot Gary Powers was shot down over Sverdlovsk with some new Soviet missile technology that could hit him when he was 13 miles in the air taking pictures of the army bases below. While Dwight tried to deny it, but that did not hold up and tensions rose. This helped set the scene for John F. Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis.

    John Franklin Kennedy Is In Charge

    John F. Kennedy was president for perhaps the most important in history: The Cuban missile crisis. He was the person who responded to the missiles in Cuba and made a solid blockade to stop it. He caused what could have been global destruction. That easily makes him a very important moment in human history.

    The U.S. did not want to have a communist country near them so they decided to fund a rebellion in Cuba that would rise up and try to make a Capitalist revolution. It failed because people did not help the rebellion because most liked Communism to the U.S.'s surprise. This then caused the Cuban Missile crisis.

    The Cuban missile crisis occurred after America tried to start a capitalist revolution in Cuba but failed. Russia provided Cuba with nuclear missiles that could hit from Cuba most of the U.S. and Mexico. The U.S. responded by making a blockade of ships to stop further missiles from entering Cuba. There was a stand off between the blockade ships and the Soviet ships. If either of them fired a weapon or both of them kept going, the world would be obliterated. The Soviet ships ended up turning back

    Opening China was necessary to thaw the Cold War and to close off Vietnam. It also helped drive a deeper wedge between the Soviet Union and China.

    The Salt 1 treaty was made because both sides were scared of nuclear war. The U.S. especially because the Soviet Union was developing anti-balistic missile technology which SALT 1 treaty would limit. The SALT 1 treaty would also limit the amount of nuclear missiles each side had.

    The STARTs were when the two leaders would meet up and sign contracts to not limit but reduce the number of nuclear missiles each country has. These went from 1982 to 1983, because the Soviet Union decided to protest long ranged missiles developing in Europe. Then they continued again during 1985 until 1991 when the Soviet Union fell.

    Ronald Reagan was an important American president. He is important because because he was the president who created more fear of the Soviet union during Detente. He also increased the nuclear stockpile and wanted to create a missile defense system.

    Mikhail Gorbachev is a very important communist leader because he led to the downfall of the Soviet Union. He loosened the grip on the Soviet Union and released a lot of his prisoners. This resulted in a lot of things, including the fall of the Berlin wall. Also, he tried to turn the U.S.S.R. into a democracy, and his attempts lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union

    The release of Soviet prisoners and loosening of the Soviet Union's grip in Eastern Europe resulted in the collapse of the Berlin wall, and overthrowing the communist rule throughout Eastern Europe. Then Gorbachev tried to change the Soviet Union to a Democratic government, this caused the Soviet Union to collapse. Others than switched the Soviet Union back to communism
