POwerless to stop them from leaving the east german government opened the gates of the berlin wall, cititizen destroyed the wall completely in celebration. Germany was now unified again and the soviets lose their last influence on europe. The cold war ends. -
Lithuania declares independent from Soviet Union
revolution quickly spread through eastern Europe as citizens rose up and overthrew their soviet-backed leaders. Lithuania was the first to declare freedom, followed by other soviet controlled regions like poland and czechoslovakia.
