Marshall plan
Plan created by the U.S. Sec of State proposes a massive aid program to rebuild Europe from the ravages of world war 2. The Marshall Plan caused the Cold War to become a reality in the lives of the people of the countries involved. Politically, the Marshall Plan reduced the influence and power of Communist parties in Western Europe. This angered the Soviet Union. This is the Gaspire theme Intellectual because it shows how the Marshall plan tried to get ride of communism in Europe. -
Berlin Blockade & Airlift
In response to U.S. aid for European countries, especially the democratic portions of Germany, the Soviets block all land and water access to the capital, Berlin, which was located in the Soviet eastern part of the country. Without help, the residents of West Berlin will be cut off and starve to death. This is the Gaspire theme social because of how it shows Russia controlling power over a small country with little power and it also shows how Berlin people were being mistreated. -
Nato
The Soviet Union captured/ surrounding countries first to help protect them from any invasion. In response to this, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed. NATO is a formal alliance between the territories of North American and Europe. Defend each other from the possibility of communist Soviet Union taking control of their nation. The Gaspire theme is Geographic because you see that the western part of earth is all Nato alliance while the eastern is all Warsaw pact/ communist. -
Soviet China
The Cold War Comes to Asia. In the closing years of World War II, American military and diplomatic representatives in China recognized that civil war was likely to erupt between the Nationalist-controlled government headed by Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Communists led by Mao Zedong. -
Korean War
The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal force, came to the aid of South Korea. China came to the aid of North Korea, and the Soviet Union gave some assistance. This connects to the Gaspire theme Political/ cival because it introduces political differences from Northern Korea and southern Korea. One leading towards communism and the other to Democratic capitalism. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact, formally the Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation, and Mutual Assistance, was a collective defence treaty among the Soviet Union and seven Soviet satellite states in Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. The Gaspire theme is Geographic because you see that the western part of earth is all Nato alliance while the eastern is all Warsaw pact/ communist. -
Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban gov’t
Cuban leader Fidel Castro (1926-) established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere after leading an overthrow of the military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. He ruled over Cuba for nearly five decades, until handing off power to his younger brother Raúl in 2008. This shows the Gapire theme political/ cival justice because it showed how Fidel castro took over Cub and changed the the goverment into a communist country. -
Bay of the pigs invasion
The US trained over 1,000 exiles to overthrow the new communist regime. They invaded in spring 1961 in what was known as the Bay of pigs invasion. After this failed, all diplomatic relations were cut. The Castro regime quickly severed the country’s formerly strong ties with the United States by expropriating U.S. economic assets in Cuba and developing close links with the Soviet Union. This Gapire theme is social because it talks about using citizens to overthrown the government at will. -
