Conflict in Israel

  • Six-Day War

    Six-Day War
After the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, tensions were high. Israel claimed its independence, but Arabs denied its existence. In 1967 countries were already planning to attack Israel, but Israel pulled the trigger first and launched airstrikes to many Arabs destroying their air support. Israel moved their ground troops quickly defeating Arab forces. This only took six days and in a matter of time, Israel had control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

    Yom Kippur War
Over all the places Israel overtook, they stuck with West Bank and Gaza with many Palestinian people. Egypt and Syria were really unhappy how their attack turned out so they launched the Yom Kippur War, a surprise attack against Israel in 1973. At first, Arab troops were gaining the upper hand. Israel's government was not fully prepared for the attack and needed help. The U.S. responded and both pushed back the Egyptian and Syrian armies. Weeks later, both sides agreed to a cease-fire.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
No Arab nation had recognized the existence of Israel until late 1970's. In 1977, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat made a decision: to make peace with Israel. Egypt finally recognized Israel and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt.

Palestinians began rioting the streets but Israel responded with strong military and police resistance. By 1993, PLO(Palestine Liberation Organization)leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister negotiated the Oslo Accords to end the violence. The agreement made Palestinians gain control over governing West Bank and Gaza
  • Second intifada

    Second intifada
Many Israeli and Palestinian people didn't like the agreement and worked to destroy peace. Militant group Hamas launched suicide bombings in Israel and an Israeli religious fanatic assassinated Rabin in 1995. By 2000, a second Intifada began. Palestinian people and security forces were joined with guns. The Israelis sent troops backed by tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships into cities of West Bank and Gaza. By 2005, Israeli backed off West Bank and Gaza and gave the Palestinians control
