Japan Surrenders To America, Ending WWII (Political)
This is both a political and social. It is a political event because of one country surrendering to the other. The social aspect (which is also the aspect that applies to Colorado) is that all the Japanese-American people were set free from the camps, including Amache. -
Ajax ski area opens at Aspen (Social)
This ski area would bring in millions of dollars for years even until modern day. It also attracted tourists with the world's longest ski lift. -
United commercial flight crashes into Crystal Mountain in Fort Collins (Social)
In the crash over 55 people died. This event is important because it is the first major plane crash with that many people dying. It may be the start of the fear of flying. -
Colorado Rocky Flats starts producing bomb parts. (Political)
The reason why they start making bomb parts is because the US and Russia are involved in the cold war. They were getting ready just in case they needed to go to war with the other country. -
A United Commercial flight blows up in Longmont Colorado. (Misc.)
This was due to a terrorist attack from a man named Jack Graham who put a bomb in a mother's suitcase. He was planning to collect insurance money. He was soon after caught and sentenced to death. -
"The Ballad of Baby Doe" the opera opens up in Denver
This opera tells about Horace Tabor, a famous Colorado business man, and his scandalous affair with "Baby Doe". -
Air Force Academy is built and opened (Political)
The infamous Air Force Academy is first used in 1958. The Academy would become a college for cadets training to become a member of the United States Air Force. -
Denver Broncos are established as a NFL team (Economy)
This would bring is billions of dollars to Colorado because of tourism and ticket sales -
Bent's Old Fort becomes a national historic site (Misc.)
Bent's Fort became a national historic site under the permission of President Dwight Eisenhower. Bent's Fort was one of the biggest trading posts in the west and is still commemorated to this day. The significance of this place is even though most of the traders didn't speak each others language yet they all traded no matter their race or language. -
Flash flood in South Platte River (Economic)
A flash flood near the South Platte River kills 28 people and causes $500 million dollars of damage. -
The United States fish and wildlife service establishes the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge (Political)
They made this to keep birds safe while migrating and to keep birds from going extinct -
Poisonous wastes in a deep wall at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal results in Earthquakes (social)
These earthquakes would be caused by poisonous wastes and the earthquakes are very unusual for Colorado. -
NORAD opens in Colorado. (Political)
NORAD or the North American Aerospace Defense Command opens up to protect the skies of North America. -
The Denver-Boulder turnpike is built. (Misc.)
This turnpike became the first public toll road in Colorado The road went from Denver to Estes Park -
The Denver Rockets become Colorado's first NBA team (Social) (Economic)
The Denver Rockets (who later the Denver Nuggets) became Colorado's first NBA team to bring in both money and state unity. -
Plutonium fire at Rocky Flats
This fire was at building 776/777 and was very dangerous due to the plutonium. This was the most expensive US industrial accident to date. -
The international Olympic committee chooses Denver for the XII Winter Olympic Games. (Social)
Even though the city of Denver was chosen to host the Olympics they turned it down in favor of not having a huge environmental impact. -
The State of Colorado creates its own public transportation system. (Political)
Colorado creates and promotes RTD as their new public transportation system. -
Colorado voters reject 5 million dollar bond for the Olympics (economic)
The voters did this so the Olympics don't have an environmental impact on Denver. -
The US Supreme Court Desegregates Denver Public Schools (Social)
This is a big deal because its the start of desegregation in Colorado and black and white students start going to the same school -
The Eisenhower tunnel begins construction. (social)
This tunnel would make it easier to get to the mountains and is still used today. -
Flash flood in Big Thompson Canyon. (Social)
This flash flood killed 143 people. This happened ours before the Denver Centennial and caused a somber mood. -
The state of Colorado observes its Centennial. (Political)
Although this was their Centennial it had a very somber mood because of the flood the day before -
The Olympic Training center is opened to athletes (Misc.)
The Olympic training center located in Colorado Springs is opened for full time athletes. The training center trains champions to this day. -
The Denver Broncos go to their first Super Bowl (Misc.)
The Broncos go to their first super bowl against the Cowboys. The Broncos lose to the Cowboys 27-10 -
President Jimmy Carter signs an act to create the Continental Divide Scenic Trail (Political)
This trail becomes a tourist point and is still used today. -
The 16th street mall opens. (Economic)
This enhances the civic center because they're are many stores and restaurants. It also brings in lots money for the city Denver. -
Fredrico Pena takes office as the first Hispanic mayor of Denver
This would lead the way for other ethnic groups to become mayor of Denver -
Broncos go to the super bowl. (Misc.)
The Broncos would go against the Redskins in the super bowl. They would lose 42-10 -
DIA starts construction (social)
DIA would replace the old Stapleton Airport for a more modern airport. -
The Denver Convention Center Opens (social)
The convention center would cause a flux of tourists and economic growth because of all the different conventions that are help there today. -
E-470 opens to the public (Economic)
This toll road would let the Denver metropolitan area get connected to other major roads -
President George Bush creates the National Renewable Energy Lab (political)
This new facility would be the house of creating new renewable energy forms. -
Denver International Airport opens to the public.
DIA would replace Stapleton Airport in favor of a bigger, better airport that can have bigger airlines come. -
The Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup (Misc.)
The Colorado Avalanche would sweep the Florida Panthers in order to win The Stanley Cup. This would be Colorado's first professional sports trophy. -
Denver Broncos would win their first super bowl.
The Broncos would defeat the Green Bay Packers in order to win their first super bowl. -
Denver Broncos go back-to-back to win their second super bowl. (Social)
The Broncos would defeat the Atlanta Falcons in order to go back-to-back in Super Bowls
