"Independence for Israel"
On 1947, the United Nations proposed to divide Palestine into an Arab state and Jewish state with Jerusalem under international control. However,the day after May 14, 1948, Arab countries like Egypt,Syria,Lebanon,Transjordan,and Iraq invaded Israel launching the first Arab-Israeli War. The Arab states did not recognized Israel as a nation. -
"Suez Crisis"
Gamal Abdel Nasser, a young military leader of a coup,decided to take control over the Suez canal, which was owned by an international company controlled by Britain and France. The British and French were outraged by this action and launched an attack on Egypt.Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and British and French troops defeated the Egyptian forces. -
"Six- Day War"
Egyptian forces closes off the Gulf of Aqaba which was Israel's route to the Red Sea. Israel strikes first launching air strikes to Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, destroying most of the their airplanes on ground. Israel took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula,Gaza Strip,West Bank and East Jerusalem. The West Bank and Gaza had a large Palestinian population. -
"Yom Kippur War"
Determined to get their land back, Egypt and Syria launched an surprise attack on Israel. With the support of the United States, Israel was able to push back Egyptian and Syrian armies. During the war, oil prices rose up dramatically because Arab members of the OPEC declared an oil embargo. -
"Camp David Accords"
In 1978, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli's Prime minister, Menachem Begin reached an agreement called the Camp David Accords. Egypt finally recognized Israel, Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. This treaty ended the thirty years of hostility between Egypt and Israel.
