Some families were held hostage until they met a qouta of goods.It is estimated that half the county's population was killed by genocide during Leopold's rule. An additional 10 million were killed by disease and exploitation.

    In 1892 the native reacted to the way they were being treated by burning industries, but that didn't stop the Belgians they still abused the Congoneise. Belgium was having a lot of international pressure after doing this massacre in Congo. They try to repair what they did by bringing schools and religion to the country. This didn't work, only a part of the natives were able to study making most of the country to fall into poverty.
