Continuum of Strategies to Respond to Inappropriate Behavior

  • Determining an error type

A teacher defines whether the undesirable behavior is a major or minor rule violation. For example, a minor offense takes place - a 1st grader who enjoys the company of his classmates has a hard time keeping his hands to himself while lining up.
  • Establishing rules and consequences

A teacher creates and establishes the procedures for lining up. As an example, one of the rules is keeping your body to yourself when standing in line. A teacher communicates the consequences for non complying with the rules.
  • Communicating the procedures to students

An educator explains the rules so the student understands them and teaches the students how to follow them.
  • Implementing non-contingent reinforcement

  • Reteaching an appropriate behavior

A teacher reteaches the positive behavior as nesessary.
  • Reminding about the consequences

A teacher reminds that there are 3 warnings after which the student receives the determined consequence for inappropriate behavior. For example, the disruptive student will be transitioning apart from his peers by walking behind the class.
  • Using contingent error correction

A teacher can use contingent error correction when the negative behavior occurs. For example, "Brian, we keep our bodies to ourselves when in line for a quick and safe transition!" A teacher praises the student to reinforce the desirable behavior as soon as the student demonstrates it.
  • Differential reinforcement of other behavior + reinforcement of the appropriate behavior

A teacher reinforces the absence of the negative behavior. For example, "If you stand straight and tall with hands by your sides you can have 10 minutes to play any math game with a friend of your choice when you finish your paper." Then the teacher verbally acknowledges targeted behavior if the student performs it.
  • Response cost

A teacher can utilize a response cost strategy if the negative behavior proceeds. For example, "After 3 warnings one of your tokens will be taken away!" Loosing tokens might hinder the student`s participation in the end of the week "Fun Friday" when all the students who earned the certain number of tokens can choose a small gift from a box.
