    This marks the first time in history the word hippie was used and would eventually become a well known term that society would be aware of. Hippies were people who lived a relaxed lifestyle who generally promoted peace and love and opposed conflict and war. The typical hippie would have long hair and dress in colourful clothing.

  • The youth international party is founded.

    The Youth International party was a countercultural revolutionary movement. Its members were known as yippies and the party was ran by youth. The party had no leader and were taken less serious for the way they conducted themselves as not being as serious by the parties around them.
  • 400,000 people march from central park for war protests.

    There was a large amount of people who were against the American involvement in the Vietnam war and made their beliefs heard by protesting for anti-war in central park.
  • Summer of love in San Francisco, first human be-in.

    The Summer of love took place in the summer of 1967 and was the event that would make the hippie lifestyle more common and accepted with all the traits the countercultural lifestyle involved. These traits include living in peace, free love meaning there was no sexual restrictions and equality amongst each other.
  • 43 people die in Detroit riots, the worst in US history.

    Taking place at the time when the countercultural hippie movement was well known, the Detroit riots demonstrates the opposite of what hippies would live for which was violence and conflict.
  • 500,000 attend Woodstock for 3 days to indulge in peace and music.

    Woodstock was a music festival that took place in the middle of August that was attended by hippies who attended the event to indulge themselves in peace and music amoungst each other. It took place at a 600 acre dairy farm in the town of Bethel in New York.
