  • 1620-The beginning

    1620-In North America they played a game called ball with foot. The game that was played was very rough as over 1000 players could play and the goals would be 1 mile apart.
  • 1640-Argicultural society

    1640-The leader of England called Oliver Cromwell he believed that if everyone works hard they would all go to heaven. He frowned upon people having fun unless you were enjoying working. All the sports that people loved were banned and if he or his workers caught you playing football or any other sport you would have been punished. This did show a stop in development of sport due to the banning of it all. agricultural society was dictated by the seasons. There was no free time for workers.
  • 1850-Influence of public schools

    1850-From 1850 onwards, sport really began to develop quickly, mainly because pupils had large amounts of free time available to them. Sport was popular and was well organised. Football rules were then developed further at the universities like Cambridge.
  • 1860-Saturday half day and better/changing working conditions

    At the end of the 19th century most workers had more time for sport and leisure. The Saturday half day was a major factor in sports development this was a time for people as they could take part in sport activities. Most of the workers was living and working in poor conditions, o the sport was slow to develop. Now over the years the working week/hours has got smaller.
  • 1862-First football club formed outisde England

    1862-The first football club formed anywhere outside of England was the Oneida football club.
  • 1866-Offside rule was introduced

    1866-in 1866 the offside rule was introduced into the football association rules. This rule would be then further developed over the years and it would become a big part of football rules. If the player is behind the back four of the defence then the referee would blow the whistle and the other team would get a free kick, as the player is offside.
  • 1869-handball was introduced

    1869-The football association rules were further developed as they added a new rule that you were not allowed to handle the ball and this rule is still used today. If the player was to handle the ball the referee can blow for a free kick.
  • 1873-Scottish association was formed

    1873-In this year of 1873 the Scottish football association was formed.
  • 1874-Red cards were introduced

    1874-In 1874 the FA made the referees send players off with they made a certain offence and they made a rule that made the teams which sides at the end of halftime.
  • 1883-international association was formed

    1883-The four British association had made a uniform code in this year and they formed the international football association board.
  • 1888-Penalty kicks were introduced

    1888-In this year the FA introduced the rule of penalty kicks if someone fouled another player in the box. If the players did foul someone in the box the referee could give the player a warning, a yellow card or a red card and this depended on what kind of tackle it was.
  • 1897-Promotion and relegations of teams

    1897-In the year of 1897 promotion and relegation was added into the football league between two divisions but now there is 5 leagues in English football and promotion and relegation has been added into the 5 leagues and now promotion and relegation has been added into every league in the world.
  • 1904-FIFA is founded

    1904-FIFA is founded in Paris on the 21st of May. This would then become a big part off football. FIFA hold award ceremony's for the top players in football and the can win the Ballon d'Or or FIFA world player of the year. Also the FIFA world cup as become a big part of football as fans from all over the world come to see their country play in the world cup every four years.
  • 1928-La Liga is formed

    1928-The La Liga is formed. The La Liga has now become one of the best leagues in the world.
  • First world cup 1930

    The first world cup started in 1930 and thirteen teams entered the competition. It was held in Uruguay. The teams were divided into four groups and who ever won their grouped that team advanced into the semi finals. The first world cup was the only one without qualification.
  • 1932-olymics

    1932-Football was excluded from the 1932 summer Olympics.
  • 1939-Shirt numbering was made compulsory

    1939-Shirt numbering was made compulsory. Now most clubs have the name and number off the player on the back of their shirt so when the commentators are talking they can call out the name of the player and people watching the game will know who is on the ball.
  • 1955-The first European cup starts

    1955-The first European cup starts. The European cup was then developed and is now called the champions league and there is another European cup called the Europa league and these competitions have become big in the football world. All the teams that finished in the top four would be in the champion’s league and all the teams that finished 5th, 6th and 7th would be in the Europa league.
  • 1981-The football league

    1981-The football league begins awarding three points for a win instead of two.
  • 1992-The back pass rule

    1992-The back pass rule was then introduced into the football world. If the player passes back to the goalkeeper and if the keeper picks it up then the referee would then give an indirect free kick to the other team and the goalkeeper could then be giving a yellow card or a red card. the back pass rule was invented due to the game being boring as players could jut pass back to their own keeper and he could pick it up and waist time.
  • 1992-Sky sports started

    1992-Sky sports was developed so people can watch live games at home. Sky sports has been developed into one of the most watched channels as people who want to watch sport can watch live games on sky sports and get updates on the football games. the premier league was formed in 1992 and sky showed premier league games. sky paid £4.2b for the rights to show the football games.
  • Bosman ruling.

    Bosman ruling was invented in April 1997. This allowed players in the EU to move to another club at the end of a contract without a transfer fee being paid.
  • 1999-Stadiums upgraded

    1999- Stadiums were updated and had become better and more fans started to follow more teams and more people could go see their team play as stadiums were updated and there was more seats. The seats were also upgraded due to the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, so the stadiums have been upgraded and have become more bigger and have put more seats in the stadiums so no one will have to stand. it also as become more safer and secure.
  • 2004-Kits more developed

    2004- Kits were developed as sponsors were printed on to the shirts of the teams so the companies were being advertised on the team’s shirt which this was good for the companies and more people would recognise them.
  • 2014-Goal-line technology introduced

    2014-In 2014 the FA decided to have goal-line technology introduced as there was a lot of arguments in football matches whether the ball had crossed the line or not and if it was a goal sometimes the linesman or the referee couldn’t see if it went in and then this would cause a lot of controversy, so the FA decided to add goal-line technology into football and the referee would have a watch on him that will say if the ball has crossed the line.
  • 2014-Goal-line technology introduced into the premier league

    2014-The premier league first used goal-line technology in January 2014. This then would become a big development in football and is now used in all leagues across the world.

    The most recent sky deal for the football rights has gone over £5b to show premier league matches which is a big thing for sky as loads of football fans will pay for the sky sports channel as they are showing their favorite team live on sky.
