    When it all began
Right from the start, my parents have been the leading force in establishing a literate mindset within me. I remember falling asleep every night to a bedtime story. My parents were the ones that sparked my love for reading and writing.
  • The Arrival of My Sister

    The Arrival of My Sister
Being the only child for two years of my life made for a tough time of really developing my literacy. Even though i was very young and did not have a large vocabulary, having no siblings disabled me from having effective communication with other children. I did not have the experience of communicating with others. However, when my sister finally arrived, I was able to gain that knowledge of expressing my feelings in words and engaging in language play.
  • Shy Guy

    Shy Guy
Throughout elementary school, I was a very shy guy. I was extremely nervous in social situations and I constantly avoided any form of communication. I did have friends, however I did not engage in language play often. It was not until middle and high school were I began speaking out and communicating with my peers. I feel as if I was much more literate in middle and high school.
  • Reading Without Comprehending

    Reading Without Comprehending
It was the summer going into first grade and i thought i was the best reader in the school. I had read big books such as "Harry Potter" and "A Series of Unfortunate Events." However, when my teacher asked what the books were about, i was stumped. I had not read these books and understood them, rather i just read the words. This is when i started to realize that reading is more than just reading words...it is also about comprehending the material.
  • Dan + Reading = LOVE

    Dan + Reading = LOVE
3rd grade was the year that i really started gaining interest in reading. I would go home from school and read for hours everyday. It also helped that for every book that we read, my elementary school gave us a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut.
  • 11th Birthday

    11th Birthday
Must 5th grade children wants video games or CDs for their birthday, however i wanted my favorite book series ("A Series of Unfortunate Events"). I will never forget the moment i opened the complete 10 book series at the time. That was definitely one of my most memorable and favorite presents.
  • Busy Bee

    Busy Bee
With high school, comes alot more responsibilites. Being in sports, clubs and other extracurricular activities really took a toll on my reading habits. Throughout high school I read very little amounts and unfortunately began to dread reading.
  • The Reading Revival

    The Reading Revival
The summer going into college is what I like to call "The Revival of my Reading." Not having to go to practice each and every day, opened up a lot of free time for reading. I finally regained my passion of reading, which I so much loved as a young boy. Even though college is a busy time, I do still try to read as much as possible. It keeps my mind sharp and enables me to be my literate self.
