  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    In order to balance congressional power between free and slave states, a border was set at 36°30', dividing the United states into free states and slave states. Any state to the south of this line allowed slavery, and likewise, any state to the north of this line outlawed slavery. Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri legalized slavery.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    In August of 1831, a slave named Nat Turner led a two day rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia. Turner and a group of 70 slaves wreaked havoc on the surrounding area before being stopped. This fanned the flame of the civil war on both ends of the spectrum. It gave those in favor of freedom for slaves hope that people could rise up against it. On the other end, it made those in favor of slavery angry that someone would try to overthrow their tradition and work force.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Toms Cabin is a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This novel brought to the attention of more people that slaves were mistreated and should not be considered property. This was a cause of the civil war because it made more and more people realize that slavery is wrong.
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave that tried to sue his owners for his freedom. The issue made its way to supreme court and was eventually overruled. The reasoning behind this is that slaves were classified as property and therefore weren't allowed human rights. This lead to the civil war because it deepened the level of disagreement between the North and South
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter
    After the South seceded from the union, federal forts became outposts in a foreign country. President Abraham Lincoln decided to send supplies and food to these garrisons. On April 12, 1861, the Confederate army launched an attack that lasted over 30 hours. The north eventually surrendered the fort. On April 15th, Lincoln asked for 75,000 volunteers to join the Union army. The Civil War was now under way.
