  • Compromise of 1850

    Said California was a free state, Utah and Mexico slavery issue will be determined by popular sovereignty, settled the boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico in favor of Texas, ending the slave trade in Washington D.C. and the new Fugitive Slave Act, saying that both Northerners and Southerners by law had to report all runaway slaves.
  • Fugitive Act of 1850

    This act required Northerners to turn in all runaway slaves.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe, it is a story of how slaves were treated. Very popular and well liked in the North and hated in South. Both Northerners and Southerners felt the novel misrepresented slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Steven Douglass brought up popular sovereignty, split Nebraska territory into two. Now becoming Kansas and Nebraska. Pro and Anti-slavery people went to Kansas trying to persuade the territory to be either way.
  • "Bloody Kansas"

    During the Wakarusa war the town of Lawrence, home to the Free State Party, was attacked by Southerners who intended to wipe out every Northerner settler there. Burned newspapers, books and the Eldridge House Hotel.
  • Dred Scott V. Sanford

    This court case brought up the issues of whether or not slaves are considered free when they live in a Free State, are they citizens and do they have the right to sue in federal court for protection of their rights and is the Missouri Compromise constitutional? The court ruled in favor of Sanford and declared Scott property to Sanford.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    Pro-slavery purposed this to allow slavery in Kansas, but Congress rejected it
  • Lincoln-Douglass Debates

    Seven debates between Abraham Lincoln the republican candidate and Senator Stephen Douglas from Illinois, they discussed slavery, state rights. Lincoln warned that slavery would only continue to divide the nation he was against allowing new states to have slaves, while Douglass thought states should decide for their selves. Freeport Doctrine stated that slavery could be excluded from territories of the United States by local legislation.

  • The Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown led 18 men to raid in arsenal for weapons in hope to set slaves free by leading them to Canada. Thought to be trying to start a slave rebellion or uprising. Brown was caught and executed.
  • The Election of 1860

    Democratic party assembled in Charleston, SC to select a presidential nominee. The election was between Abraham Lincoln (Northerner) and Stephen A. Douglas(Northerner) as well as between Breckinridge and Bell (Southerners)
  • South Carolina Leaves the Union

    South Carolina voted unanimously to secede from the Union. They were the first to leave.
  • Secession

    Georgia , Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas joined South Carolina in leaving the Union.
  • Civil War

    The war began . The union won the war.
