    Ancient roman empire

    Originally ruled by kings but changed into a democracy. They weren't a true representative democracy because not all officials were elected. Citizens were allowed to vote for some of their representatives and if they didn't like them they could be replaced.

    Ancient Greece

    Greece became democratic and required participation of the people. All citizens could participate. By participating they gave the government consent to be governed. They had an Assembly that voted on issues and a Council who approved their decisions.

    The English wrote this document that showed that the king could no longer do whatever he wanted, but had to follow the law of the land.
  • Petition of Right

    English constitutional document that sets out specific liberties of the subject that the king is prohibited from infringing, financed the kings unpopular policy that forced loans and forced people to home soldiers in their own houses.
  • English Bill of Rights

    This Bill creates separation of powers, limits the powers of a king and queen, and enhances the democratic election and freedom of speech.

    French philosopher who wrote that power must be divided in government to prevent one part from becoming too powerful.

    He published the book Common Sense which says that the best form of government is a republic
