Development of Cell Theory by Matthew Mahan

  • Robert Hooke

Robert Hooke was the scientist to discover the cell using a microscope. He was observing a slice of cork under the microscope when he observed it was made of holes and walls. These holes were called "cells" and this laid the foundation for all of cell theory. Bibliography:

  • Antony van Leeuwenhoek

Antony van Leeuwenhoek was the scientist who discovered microorganisms. In his work, he described very small blobs (the cells) that moved back and forth of their own accord. He had discovered that single-celled organisms were alive! The previous model of the cell only described them as small holes, but Leeuwenhoek was the one to discover the fact that cells are alive. however, Brown had discovered that there is at least a nucleus inside of the cell. This opened the door for possibility of other things within the cell.
  • Robert Brown

Robert Brown was the scientist credited with the discovery of the cell's nucleus. He wrote about this discovery in a paper to the Linnean Society. He believed that the nucleus was unique to only plant cells, and not to other types of cells. Previously, cell theory only mentioned many small blobs making up different organisms, Bibliography:

  • Rudolf Virchow

Rudolf Virchow was the scientist who found that ALL cells come from other cells. Previously, it was thought that only certain types of cells were able to reproduce, but Virchow proved that model to be wrong. He found this answer when he first doubted Remak's theory of cell division, but later thought it to be correct. He modified the theory and published his report. Bibliography:

  • Matthias Jakob Schleiden

Matthias Jakob Schleiden was the first scientis to recognize the importance of the nucleus in the cell. Schleiden sensed the importance of the nucleus in the process of making more cells. It was previously unknown how cells were made, but Schleiden's model showed that cells reproduced from the nucleus. Bibliography:

  • Theodor Schwann

Theodor Schwann is the scientist who made the discovery that cells were NOT limited to only plants, that all living things were made of cells. He made the discovery when talking with Matthias Jakob Schleiden, and he said he noticed familiar-looking structures in animals. He had discovered that animals were also made of cells. Not only that, but Schwann is also the person to come up with the idea of- Bibliography:

cell theory. He said that all living things were made of cells which improved upon the last version of the cell by disproving plants as being the only organisms with cells; animals also were comprised of cells.
