  • Kindergarten

    Froebel opens the first known kindergarten in Blankenburgh,
    Germany.
  • First American Kindergarten

    Margarethe Schurz opened the first known American Kindergarten in her home in Watertown, Wisconsin. It was a German speaking School. In 1860 the first english speaking Kindergarten was founded in Boston.

    At the Hampton Institute The Butler School was opened as a free school for "Black Children" including Kindergarten curriculum.

    The first teacher training program for Kindergarten was established at the Oshkosh Normal School in Pennsylvania.
