    Turn Of the Century ( wilfred Laurier )
    Wilfred Laurier was the prime minister of Canada during the Golden Age. Laurier and his liberal party took power in 1986 and maintained his power for 15 years. in the early 1900's Laurier started to face problems. Some of these problems were based on conflict between the French and English Canadians since the French felt as if Canada should do nothing to help out Great Britian. But the English Canadians felt we should help since we are a Dominion of Britian, He tried to keep his people content.

  • The Start Of WWI

    The Start Of WWI
    WWI started from an direct cause of an assisnation. The person who was assasinated was the archduke Franz Ferdinand. Franz was a Royal price , that was travelling throughout Sarajevo With his wife. At first a person tried to bomb their vehicle, but failed. Later on Franz and his wife got shot by an assasin while sitting in their vehicle. the caused the allies of germany and hungary to declare war on serbia, and later on started the first world war.

    Battle Of Ypres
    Battle Of Ypres was one of the most major battles for Canadian troops. In this battle there was new technology being introduced such as the gas attacks. These gas attacks were first used on the western Front against the French and Algerians. The British and Canadian troops came together to advance against the enemy forces. The counter attack brought a hult to the Germans even though the Canadians sufferd 6,000 casualties. They were reconized as first-class troops for defeating the enemys gas.

    Battle Of The Somme
    In the Battle Of The Somme , the British, Imperial and French were involved in attacking the Germans defences. Canadian forces later entered the battle on August 30. In this battle tanks were first used on the western front. The losses that the allies had sufferd were 623,907 soldiers and estimate of 660,000 losses the Germans had sufferd. Out of all the calsualities the allies were able to gain a total of 13km, along a 35km front. After this battle, every year a ceremony is held at St. Jhon's.

    WWI Vimy Ridge
    The Battle of Vimy Ridge happend on 9-14 April 1917 during WWI. This Ridge was controlled by the Germans. Many allied forces such as France and Great Britian tried to push the Germans out of the Ridge, but were un successful. In Spring 1917 the Canadian forces were given the task to take over the ridge. Over 10,000 Canadians launched there attack on a 6.4km front and won their battle. After the battle the Canadian Forces were reconized as an elite force. Canadians got pride for their victory.

    Prohibition
    Prohibition was a time when people thought that it was a good idea to ban alcohol. With the baning of alcohol they thought that it would put a stop to crime, public drunkeness, and to put a stop on the men for blowing their paychecks and then abusing their family. During Prohibition people started to make their own home made alcohol and then could die from it. this time was also the prime time for bootlegging alcohol into and out of a country. Prohibtion lasted from 1920-1933 untill it was legal

    The Famous Five
    The famous five were a group of woman from Canada. This group was fighting for women rights such as is a woman referd as a " Person" ?. The Group of women also fought for a seat in the senate. The group was supported by the supreme court in calgary and then took their case to a court in Britain. They won their battle and one of the woman earned a seat in the senate for the first time. They also earned that the word "person" includes woman.Because of this group woman today have the right to vote.

    Bennett created relief camps for thousands of homeless men who are looking for work. These men were given a chance to get off the streets and were given a chance to make some income. These men were also given food, shelter and clothing. These men would have to work such as building bridges, roads, cutting trees and digging ditchs. They would do multible hours of work per day and would earn 20 cents everyday.

    Riding the Rods
    Riding the rods was a time that started in 1930 during the great depression. Men would hop on trains and go from place to place, in search of jobs. Since these men couldn't find any jobs in their area and had no cars to get them to places farther than their region, they would have to ride the trains. Most of the men were forced to go ride the trains and try to bring home money in order to feed their family and to afford supplies. These men would travel by the hundreds and would be all sweaty.

    The invasion of Poland started when Hitler promised Poland that he wouldn't invade the eastern side of Poland. Hitler broke this agreement that he had made with Poland and went ahead and invaded all of poland instead. Poland reacted with trying to drive Germany out of there land and then later led up to war when Poland turned into defensive positions.

    The Phoney war took place at the Maginot line , Siegfried line. This happend shortly after the invasion of Poland. This was mostly between Germany and Great Britian. Alot of people and countries considerd this war as a "sitting war" since nothing much happend between both sides. This means that they would not attack each other but would continue to cause tention between one and another. The reason why alot of things didn't happen in this war was because the lack of military support.

    Battle Of Britian
    Germany attempted to attack and try to take over Great Britian. Germany mostly tried to win this battle in the air, but failed to do so. The reason that the germans failed to win this battle was because Britian's air force was far more advanced than the Germans. Britian's planes came with advanced radars, and also more machine guns on there planes. During this battle alot of air bomb raidings would happen over the towns and would target civilians if they were able to.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    An American Military base was stationed at Pearl Harbor. They stationed alot of naval ships and war planes. The americans got sneaked attacked by Japan. Admiral Yamamoto guided the Japanese planes to bomb the U.S's Naval ships. the Japanese used advanced planes and torpedoes, Radio silence, meticulous planning and all this happend before Japan declared war on the United States. The United states never exspected for this event to happen and alot of soldiers and ship crew suffered and died.
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    With travelling through the canal being impossible, Britian and France issued a cease fire. Egypt refused and then was bombed. It was said that the invasion had been planned before hand. This was a Cold war event because it was a military and diplomatic confrontation. This crisis was due to the nationalism of the Suez canal. Later on they discovered a way to make peace along this canal and so it no longer had to be patroled and protected.

    Prime minister Pearson and the Liberals endorsed a new flag for Canada. Later on in 1965 the decision was made and Canada got a new flag ( Red Maple Leaf). There was alot of opposement from defenbaker and his party. It was told that Pearson was favouring the French-Canadians. But Pearson looked at it as a step towards unification of French and English Canadians. This was also a step of Canadian independence from Great Britan.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    In the Cuban missle crisis the U.S.S.R was stationing missles in Cuba and then was pointing them directly at the United states. At the time Kennedy was president and this event did not scare him. Kennedy set up a navy boarder around Cuba and told the U.S.S.R if they cross the U.S's ships, it would be an act of declaring war. In the end the U.S.S.R backed down and didn't temper with the United States. they turned around their ships and took the missles out of Cuba and all the tension was over.

    The immigration act was a time when Canada was allowing immigrants to come into Canada. Most of these immigrants were coming from third-world counties. Some of these immigrants were Asians, Africans, and American Carribean people. This later on led to the Immigration Act, were immigrants were based on people who were seeking, jobs, education, exsperience, independence or if an immigrant already had family in Canada.

    In the October crisis the FLQ kidnapped two of the famouse politicians in order to further separatism. Prime Minister Trudeau sent in troops and for the first time in peacetime invokes the war measures act. This takes away the civil rights for Canadians. Later on Peirre Laporte was founded dead and James Cross was found alive one month later. The FLQ kidnappers were later caught .

    In the Quebec Referendum, Quebec rejects seperation from Canada. The Government of Quebec has made a new agreement with the rest of Canada, based on the equality of nations.this agreement would enable Quebec to acquire the exclusive power to make its laws. Canada offered Quebec a constitution to make everything equal but Quebec government turned it down, since they wanted to make things equal for themselfs.

    Maple Leaf Gardens Closes
    In air Canada centre was the losses of the leafs. This was also the time when one of the best hockey players of all time " Wayne Gretzky" retired from the sport of hockey and went off in the hall of fame. The maple leaf gardens was the name of a indoor hockey arena that was used by the maple leafs team. This indoor hockey centre was located in Toronto, Ontario. The arena also hosted two of the Summit Series hockey games between Canada and the U.S.S.R. shortly after the arena closed .
