  • Education Act 1944

    Education Act 1944
    Act establishes tripartite system of education in England, Wales & Northern Ireland (Grammar Schools, Secondary Modern Schools & Secondary Technical Schools). Also known as the Butler Act, after Richard Austen Butler, who was made President of the Board of Education by Winston Churchill in 1941.
  • Free School Milk

    Free school milk introduced by the first post-war Minister of Education Ellen Wilkinson. Failed attempt to raise school leaving age to 16.
  • School leaving age raised to 15

    Delayed from 1939 due to WWII, and included in Butler Act 1944
  • GCE O Levels & A Levels introduced

    Intended to cater for a range of subjects since the raising of the school leaving age from 14 to 15 in 1947.

    Factor in the creation of the three-tier school system (First, Middle, High) with children transferring to each after four years.
    Also abolished corporal punishment in primary schools.

    Introduced in the workplace, as well as schools and colleges, as a vocational qualification for a more practical approach to a range of subjects

    Introduces the National Curriculum, and Key Stages.
  • GCSEs introduced

    First awarded in 1988, replaced O levels and CSEs after being criticised as failing the lowest O level entrants and highest CSE entrants. Some critics see it as the education system 'dumbing down'.

    Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) introduced in all state schoools for all seven year olds

    Introduced to monitor schools on their performance and results, and reviewing teaching, learner progress, behaviour and equality. OFSTED reports viewed as high priority by all schools, and seen as the ultimate indicator of how good a school is.
