    No Child Left Behind
    No Child Left Behind was approved by Congress in 2001 and President George W. Bush signed it into law in 2002. This controversial law required that all students be taught by highly qualified teachers and that all students would be reading and writing proficiently by a certain time frame.

    H.R. 1350, The Individuals with Disability Improvement Act
    The Individuals with Disability Improvement Act of 2004 reauthorized and modified IDEA. The changes took effect on July of 2005. The changes involved modifications to the IEP process and procedural safegaurds, it aligned with NCLB, there was an increase in decision making for school personnel as far as special education placements, and it required school districts to implement the Response to Intervention approach.
  • Common Core States Standards Initiative

    In 2009, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School officers launche the Common Core Initiative. These are standards that were expected to be adopted by many states. California is one of these states.

    Race to the Top
    Race to the Top was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It is a competetive education grant that requires the following: great teachers and leaders, state success factors, standards and assessments, general selection criteria, turning around the lowest-achieving schools, and a data system to support education.

    Senate Bill 1381 amended California Code to change the birthday requirement for admission to kindergarten and first grade, thus resulting in a Transitional Kindergarten program. *I was unable to find the correct month and day.

    Common Core Implementation in CA
    On March 7th, 2012 the State Board of Education approved the implementation of Common Core in California.
  • Senate Bill 876

    On July 1st, 2015 the amendment to EC 48000c changed the requirements for TK. The change involes the educaiton and permits that a TK teacher will need, this includes either 24 units in early childhood education or child development, professional experience that is comparable to those 24 units, or a child development teacher permit. If a teacher was assigned as a TK or TK/K teacher prior to July 1st, 2015 then he/she will be grandfathered to teach TK.
