  • John Muir

    John Muir
    John Muir was an influential person in the Environmental Movement. In 1892, he founded the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club is a group of people devoted to the environment and trying to reduce humanity's impact on it. John Muir was instrumental in the adoption of a forest conservation project as well as the creation of the Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks.

    Rachel Carson
    Rachel Carson was the author of a famous book in the 1900s, Silent Spring. This book was influential to the environmental movement because it brought attention to the effect that pesticides could have on wildlife and humans and led to further discussion on what could be done to help the Earth, as well as many laws being passed. Rachel Carson was given the National Book Award for Silent Spring.

    Donora Smog
    In Pennsylvania, a steel and wire plant released harmful emissions of sulfur dioxide into the air. This harmful gas coated a town in a valley and caused 20 people to die and hundreds to go to the hospital. This unfortunate and jolting incident led to the first ever U.S. conference on air pollution. This conference was a big stride in raising awareness for the looming threat of pollution and its potentially harmful effects on our health.

The Clean Air Act is one of the accomplishments of the Environmental Movement as it protected the environment.

Roughly 20 million people participated across the nation on the First Earth Day; it was a huge success! Earth Day is still celebrated every year and is a major accomplishment of the environmental movement because it brought awareness to the major issues we are facing to countries all over the globe.

    Greta Thunberg is a 17 year old climate activist who was born in Sweden. Greta joined together numerous universities to form protests and rallies to advocate for the environment. Greta is a modern-day environmentalist and spreads a message that becomes more relevant with each passing day. She has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. She has gained international influence and is continuing to raise awareness for the Environmental Movement.
