    Romulus and Remus
    753 BC. Twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, were believed to have founded Rome in 753 BC. The legend says that they were abandoned by their parents in the Tiber River and raised by a she-wolf. When they became adults, they founded the city of Rome. This is one of the earliest pieces of Roman history. It was the start of one of the world's greatest civilizations.

    Rome Becomes Republic
    509 BC. Rome was ruled by a king as a city in the beginning. However, in 509 BC, Rome formed a new type of government. The republic was formed. It happened after the Romans overthrew their Etruscan king. This type of government allowed the citizens to elect a representative to rule on their behalf.

    Law of Twelve Tables

    Law of Twelve Tables
    449 BC. In 449 BC, the Law of Twelve Tables was formed. This is one of the earliest known set of written laws. This law gave plebeians more rights. Since the law was written down, the rights of the plebeians couldn't be taken away.

    Punic Wars

    Punic Wars
    264 BC. The beginning of the first Punic War was in 264 BC. The first war was fought mainly at sea. Carthage won due to it's powerful navy. The second Punic War was started by Hannibal invading Italy. He ravaged Italy and killed around 50,000 Romans before Publius Cornelius Scipio sailed to Africa and attacked Carthage itself. The Second Punic War remained in the heads of Romans. The Romans attacked and defeated Carthage in 149 BC. That was the third and final Punic War

    Julius Caesar
    100 BC. Julius Caesar was born July 12, 100 BC. He became the first dictator of Rome in 45 BC. He is considered one of the greatest military generals of all-time. He had supreme military power, and he overthrew the existing government. He was assassinated in 44 BC.

    The Triumvirates

    The Triumvirates
    60 BC. The First Triumvirate was established in 60 BC. It was made up of Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompey, and Licinius Crassus. After the other two members died in 44 BC, Julius Caesar was made dictator. After his murder, the Second Triumvirate was made. It was composed of Octavian, Marc Antony, and Lepidus.

    Julio-Claudians

    Julio-Claudians
    14 AD. The Julio-Claudians began ruling in 14 AD after Augustus' death. Julio Claudians are relatives of Julius Caesar, and they led for 54 years. There were good and bad rulers from this line. Tiberius was considered a good leader. However, his successor Caligula is known as one of the worst and most brutal leaders in the history of the world.

    96 AD. A new line of emperors, the Good Emperors, was established in 96 AD. It was composed of five emperors and ruled for nearly 100 years. Nearly all of these emperors came from provinces rather than Rome. The Roman empire grew greatly under the rule of the Good Emperors. Rome reached its largest point the Good Emperor, Trajan.

    Pax Romana
    27 BC. Pax Romana, Roman peace in Latin, began in 27 BC. Augustus' reign began in 27 BC. Pax Romana ended after the the Good Emperor's reign in 180 AD. This long era was characterized by many things. The most important of which are a stable government, a strong legal system, widespread trade, and most importantly, peace.

    Rome Becomes Empire
    27 BC. Gaius Octavian Thurinus, Julius Caesar's nephew, became the first emperor of Rome in 27 BC. He took the name of Augustus Caesar. Although emperor was his title, he was never seen as one. He ruled from 31 BC to 14 BC. He made remarkable changes in Rome. Augustus Caesar led Rome into Pax Romana.
