Erikson's Timeline

  • Middle Childhood: Industry vs. Inferiority

As a child, I was quiet, submissive, and remember often feel powerless. I had kind and loving parents, but they struggled in their relationship, and I think that I didn't want to create more problems for them. I didn't have a lot of opportunities to explore new experiences and often felt nervous and unsure about overcoming challenges.
  • Early Adulthood: Intimacy vs. Isolation

The thought of marriage scared me. It felt like a commitment that was just too big. When my husband and I were dating, I got scared and told him that I couldn't date him anymore. He gave me great advice. He said that if I had a fear that lasted more than four days, then it was a valid one, and that we should discuss it, but to wait for that four-day mark before I made any decisions. None of my concerns lasted four days. We've now been happily married for over 15 years.
  • Middle Adulthood: Generativity vs. Stagnation

This is the life stage that I am in now. I have five children, and it is one of my main priorities to spend my time teaching and training them. Although it is sometimes difficult to put so much effort into their well being, I feel that now is the time to focus on them.
