    The Humber Bridge
    The Humber Bridge was built between 1972 and 1980 and at that time, it was the world’s largest single-span bridge reaching almost 2,200m. On June 21, 1981 the first traffic crossed the bridge. To make the bridge, to took 8 years and thousands of steel and concrete
    This effected the present day because if there were no Humber Bridge, getting from Barton-Upon-Humber to Hessle would take a lot longer

  • Hunger Strike

    Hunger Strike
    At the Maze Prison near Belfast, Republican prisoners wanted to be treated as political prisoners and not criminals, so they went on a hunger strike. The first strike began in 1980, and was called off with no deaths. In March, 1981 the British Governemnt didn't agree, so 10 men starved themelves to death. Over 60 people were killed outside of the prison from violence.

  • UK Recession

    UK Recession
    In Britain, the number of people out of work isover 3 million people for the first time since 1930. In Northern Ireland, over 20% of people are unemployed. On January 26 1982, more than 750,000 people were classed as long-term unemployed.

  • Argentina invades British territory

    Argentina invades British territory
    Three days after the invastion, the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent a task force to release the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. 255 British and 655 Argentine servicemen were killed. Many of them were sailors who died during the attack on the Royal Navy warships. Later on June 14, the conflict ended when Argentine garrison surrendered to the British troops.
  • Miners Strike

    Miners Strike
    On March 5, there was a strike over the pit closure threat in Yorkshire. WIthing a week, there were violent clashes between miners that were striking and policemen. The strike failed, and was called off after one year, which allowed the pit closures to go ahead.

  • Brighton Hotel bombing

    Brighton Hotel bombing
    A time bomb was put in the Brighton Hotel by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member Patrick Magee to kill Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Margaret was able to escape injury, but five people were killed and thrity-one were injured. Out of the five peope, two high-profile members of the Conservative Party were killed "Britain: 1945 to Present." BCC.com. This effected the present day because if there was no bomb, the high-profile members of the Conservative Party wouldn't be killed
  • Agricultural fall

    Agricultural fall
    Agriculture began to slowly become unpopular. This caused the prices to rise, and farmers' salaries fell. There was then a scarcity of agricultural products. A lot of the farmers had to then move to the city for money and better jobs.

    2016. This effected today because if there was no agricultural fall, then a lot of people wouldn't have lost their jobs and could have made a lot more money. They could have needed that money to live.

    Major industries are privatised
    Privatisation is the transfer of assets from the public sector to the private sector. In the UK, state-owned enterprises contribute less than 1.5% of total employment, and 2% of GDP.     World Wide Web
    In early 1989, Tim Berners-Lee created the idea of the World Wide Web to make a new way of using internet technology to share information. He was working in Switzerland at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory.In the following year, he wrote the very first web browser, and found the World Wide Web "Sir Tim Berners-Lee." World Wide Web Foundation. This effected the present day because, if there was no world wide web, there would not be any important information online for people
  • The Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall
    The Berlin Wall was a wall that built to keep West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and East Berlin from 1961 to 1989. East Germany's communtist rulers gave permission for the wall to be taken down, and for gates to open. This was a result of many days of mass protest.

  • Channel Tunnel

    Channel Tunnel
    The Channel tunnel helped many people for transportation. It is called the Channel tunnel because it goes under the English cahnnel. This tunnel has over 3 tracks and opened on May 6. This effected today because if there was no Channel Tunnel, many people wouldn't have any transportation, and they might not have been able to get to work or somewhere important that they needed to go for an emergency
