    Prince Hentry starts a navigation school
    Prince Henry started the first school for oceanic navigation. It also taught astronomical observatory. His school was in Sagres, Portugal. Students learned nagivation, map-making, and science, so they could sail down the west of Africa.

    The journey caused the explorers to discover the Cape of Good Hope. Because of this expodition, Europeans could trade with India and parts of Asia with out having to pass through the Middle East and deal with the expensive middlemen there.

    Christopher Columbus sailed and landed on a small island. He called this island San Salvador, and he believed he was in the Indies, or Indonesia and Malaysia. Columbus died thinking he was in the east by sailing west, but he actually discovered a “new world.”

    Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama complete his voyage to India. It was the first time anyone had travelled to India by sea from Europe. Vasco wanted to find a sea route to India because the land routes were blocked by the powerful Ottoman Empire.
