Events from 1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    It largened the division in the North and South making the north stronger in abolitionism and causing the British to lower their sympathy for the south. This novel was a big contributing factor causing the civil war. Causing many Northerners to really see how unjust slavery was and the south to defend themselves even harder than they were doing before.
  • Republican Party

    The party successfully guided the Union to a victory in the Civil War, and after the Republicans won they forced Congress to ratify the policy of the South which is why the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were added to the constitution and it granted equal rights to all of the Southern citizens.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    It repeals the Missouri Compromise and it allowed popular sovereignty meaning each territory was allowed to decide whether to be a slave or free state. It caused a violent uprising in both proslavery and antislavery activists to influence the votes. It caused the issue of slavery to become worse and more violent and ultimately ignited the first if the civil war.
  • Bloody Kansas

    During 1855 and 1859 the citizens of Kansas were a part of a violent guerrilla war between pro and antislavery forces which shaped American politics and contributed to the start of the Civil war in a significant way. Kansas was known to some as the first battles of the Civil war because it was a battle between proslavery forces and antislavery forces.
  • Brooks- Sumner Incident

    After Sumner being beaten nearly to death with a cane by Brooks this incident had a significant contribution to the countries division over slavery. The South considered brooks a hero glorified his doings while the North saw him as a villian and it showed them even more how the South were inflexible, uncompromising representative of slave power. Which brought more hostility between the North and the South.
  • Election of 1856

    Democrats warned that the if a Republican president won that it would cause a Civil war. James Buchanan won and he was the most unskilled, incompetent president of the White House because of the fact that he didn't try to unite the divided states over the issue of slavery and he didn't do anything to stop the South from seceding in the lead up to the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott

    The Dred Scott case destroyed the agreement between free and slave states which angered the nation ever more which was another factor leading up to the Civil War. It widened the both political and social gap between the North and South and outraged abolitionists all over.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This was one out of four proposed constitution for Kansas. This constitution was drafted by pro-slavery advocates and it excluded slaveholding being protected in the state and it excluded free blacks from its bill of rights. This caused another rush into the territory for people to vote and once the free staters discovered their plan to keeping slavery in the state they boycotted the convention ultimately adding more reasons that lead up to the war happening.
  • House Divided Speech

    The speech was intended to show the North and South an even more fiercely divided nation though it didn't prevent the war it still showed how a resolution was needed because the government nor would America survive if it was permanently half slave and half free state.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Lincoln states in this debate that the nation would in the end be all slave states or all free states and not have anything between and that the end of the Missouri Compromise and the Dred Scott decisions was evidence that slavery was spreading into the Northern states. Douglass
  • John Brown

    John Brown was a abolitionist who led 21 men to Harpers ferry in intent to take federal armory and ignite a nationwide uprising against slavery which didnt go as planned which resulted in his hanging for treason but he then become a martyr for those that were seeking to end slavery. The raid decreased some of the tension the North had over slavery spreading and it motivated Americans to find a peaceful solution to the issue of slavery.
  • Harper's ferry

    It was a raid intended to be a part of the first stage of a plan for establishing an independent stronghold of freed slaves lead by John Brown.
  • Election 1860

    The results of this election pushed the US into war. This was the first and only time the party ran a candidate for president, and the election really showed the divisions within the US before the war began. it caused the Southern States to secede from the Union because they were afraid of Lincoln's policies though they had already been planning to secede if a Republican won the election.
  • Secession

    the Southern States being secession led to the Confederacy being established and ultimately the Civil war. When the Union armies defeated the Confederate armies in the Civil War causing the secession to be defeated as well.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    Lincoln promised to not interfere with the institution of slavery where it already existed,and also to stop federal government activities temporarily in places that had hostility.
