    A compromise to keep the peace. California was a free state, the Slave trade was abolished in Wasington D.C, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, and New Mexico & Utah. Some states nullified the compromise.

    A series of debates for the Election of the Senator of Illinois in 1858, where Lincoln said slavery should not be expanded.

    Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom. The Supreme Court ruled that African-Americans were not citizens and could not sue. This increased tensions between the North and the South.
