A compromise to keep the peace. California was a free state, the Slave trade was abolished in Wasington D.C, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, and New Mexico & Utah. Some states nullified the compromise. -

Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom. The Supreme Court ruled that African-Americans were not citizens and could not sue. This increased tensions between the North and the South. -

A raid happened in Harper's Ferry which was led by John Brown. He was trying to create a revolt and end slavery, but failed and became a martyr. -

Presidential election in 1860 between Lincoln and Hamlin. Voting was based on where voters lived, Resulted in the South seceding and forming the Confederate States of America. -
