    The Berlin Wall Goes Up
    Germany, along with its capital Berlin, after WWII was split between the Soviet Union in the East and the US, Britain, and France in the West. Due to Soviet influence communism took control of East Germany; as a result many refugees fled to West Germany. Embarrassed East Germany got permission from Khrushchev to stop the flow of emmigrants, the solution the Berlin Wall.

    The wall at first was only a makeshift wall, but was reinforced to become sturdier. Many inhabitants of East Germany still tried to cross the wall, some succeeded others died trying. Finally in 1989 as the cold war thawed the wall was brought down.

    During the cold war Khrushchev became the first Soviet head of state to visit America. This news became the spotlight of news for nearly two weeks. There were hopes of peace-talks between the Soviets and the United States. However during his visit he was infuriated by some illmade remarks and the denial of him visiting Disneyland. September 27th he briefly met with President Eisenhower to say goodbye and was escorted to the airport by vice-president Nixon.

    U.S. Chinese relations brought about by Nixon’s travel to China were a part of the Cold War as the ploy was to make it easier for the U.S. to deal with the Soviets. The possible leverage over Vietnam against the Soviets especially show part of the Cold War as the U.S. is trying to stop the spread of communism within Vietnam by containment while the Soviets want the opposite. The Vietnam war itself was a proxy war instigated by the U.S. and Russia due to the cold war.

    Since 1949 when China successfully was taken control by a communist revolution, The U.S. and China’s relationship had been a bitter one. Nixon surprised America by heading to China to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries. The hidden meaning for re-establishing diplomatic relations was so to hopefully make the Soviet Union more agreeable to U.S. policy requests, especially concerning Vietnam. Nixon overall concluded that he should try to use China to contain Vietnam.

    The U.S. was heading into this Olympic gold medal game with the Soviet Union undefeated, having never lost an Olympic gold medal in boys basketball before. The Soviets proved to be tough competition for the youngest to represent America in basketball. The U.S. team only lead the game once, but that was 50-49 with one-second left on the clock. It was decided to put three seconds back on the clock for the Soviets had apparently signaled for a time-out.

    The buzzer rang finally signaling that the Americans had won, however it was said that the three seconds hadn’t been put properly back on the clock, so they reset the clock for a third time giving the Soviets a third chance. This time the Soviets managed to make a basket as time ran out signaling a Soviet win. Americans were in disbelief over the events of the game and claimed the Soviets had won by cheating and that they wouldn’t have minded the loss if they had been beat fair and square.

    The Cold War comes into play in this game’s final decision over who had won, where it seems to have been made through Cold War politics rather than the actual rule-book, as three out of five of the jury members who had voted had been from Soviet-allied nations.

    The U.S. faced off with the Soviets in the semi-final in the 1980 Olympics for hockey. The U.S. was seen as huge underdogs who had surprised everyone leading up to the current game, as the U.S. team was made of amateurs, now they were to face Soviet professional players. Two-weeks previous to the game taking place the U.S. had played the Soviets in an exhibition match and had been crushed 10-3.

    Under direction of the ruthless coach Brooks’ the team manage to come together and play better than anyone expected. Ten minutes to go in the game the U.S. had a lead of 3-2, and they managed to defend themselves for those 10 minutes to result in a win. Nobody had expected the U.S. to win, and as the game ended the announcer asked the crowd, “ Do you believe in miracles?” As such the 1980 Olympic hockey game has since been referred to as the Miracle on Ice.

    This game connects to the Cold War as this game was really the beginning of the end of the war. The game was held in a time where these two superpowers were facing off and these tensions ended up being placed onto the two teams that stepped onto the ice that day. So in a sense that hockey match was a old War Itself literally and figuratively.
