Evolution of The Atomic Model

By grant2j
  • First Model

Rutherford used existing ideas about the atom and proposed an atomic model in which the electrons move around the nucleus. His model only explained only a few simple properties of atoms.
  • Bohr Model

One of Rutherford's students changed his model to include newer discoveries about the energy of an atom. A quantum of energy is the amount of energy required to move an electron from one energy level to another.
  • Quantum Mechanical Model

The Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger used the new results to devise and solve a mathematical equation describing behavior of the electron in the hydrogen atom. The model comes from mathematical solutions to the Schrodinger equation.
