Evolution of the Computer

  • Apple Macintosh

    Apple Macintosh
Steve Jobs invented the Apple Macintosh. It came with two apps- MacWrite and MacPaint. Common people could use the computer. The Mac initially had 128 KB of RAM, but it came with 22 KB used up. This left only 106 KB for the user. It had a nine inch display and had a 400 K disk drive in a beige case. It also had a mouse which was not part of many computers. Unlike today, there was no arrow keys and the Ctrl key was yet to be invented. http://lowendmac.com/1984/1984-the-first-macs/
  • IBM 701

    IBM 701
The IBM 701 was invented on April 7, 1953. Thomas J. Watson was the chairman who informed his team about the IBM 701. It was actually an advanced calculator. It was primarily used for designing aircraft. The IBM 701 was being invented at the time of the Korean War. The size of a computer has shrunk since the IBM 701’s time. The computer was either 36 bits or 18 bits, and it limited the user to 2048 words. http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/701/701_intro.html

  • NEC 1101

    NEC 1101
Elichi Goto invented the NEC 1101. The product was finshed in 1958, but was started in 1954. The software used parametrons, a Japanese technology similar to magnetic cores. The memory capacity was up to 512 words, and the NEC 1101 was used primarily for scientific and engineering calculations. It contributed to the development of the other parametron computers at NEC. https://www.britannica.com/topic/NEC-Corporation http://museum.ipsj.or.jp/en/computer/dawn/0017.html

    IBM 5100
Bob Dubke was was one engineer that worked on the IBM 5100. This computer was different at the time. The circuit boards had a peculiar IBM silver colored metal integrated circuit chip. It didn't have a discrete CPU, but over 15 large chips. The IBM 5100 only used two programming languages and weighed 55 pounds, yet was considered portable. http://oldcomputers.net/ibm5100.html

  • Apple 2

    Apple 2
Steve Wozniak invented the Apple 2. The new features of this computer included a color display, a keyboard, and eight expansion slots. This was the first computer to have a color display. Apple II could support up to 4K or 8K of RAM. Common people used this product because it was portable and was not programmed for professionals. Apple 2 could preform more functions and calculations. apple2history.org/history/ah02/

    iMac
Steve Jobs invented the iMac. People who had almost no knowledge of computers could easily pick up on using the iMac.It came in multiple colors, which was alluring to many people. It had 32 MB RAM, a 4GB hard drive, and was much clearer than the older versions. Today's iMacs have 14 million more pixels, 62,000 times faster graphics, 100 times more ram, 750 times more storage, and 366 times more processing power. http://www.apple.com/imac/then-and-now/
