Proclamation of Neutrality
George Washington issued this as the president in order to make sure that the US stayed out of troubles between Great Britian and France. The two nations were in a war at the time. This said that anyone who violated this law in the US would and could be prosecuted. It also said if they got involved in this the US wouldn't protect them. -
XYZ Affair
The French had some agents talk to the US and this insulted many Americans. This all started when George Washington sent two American diplomats to meet with French officials in order to stpp tensions going on between the French and Americans. When they arrived three agents came to meet with them and demanded money before thery could meet with the officials. This made the Americans very mad and they saw this as bribery. -
Convention of 1800
This helped settle the many growing disputes between the US and France. After the XYZ Affair relationships between the US and France were very bad and nothing helped until this to fix them. -
Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson buys the Louisiana Territory from Napolean of France in order to expand the US territory. It was 15 million dollar purchase that doubled the size of the US. Some Americans didn't like this because they felt that he shouldn't have the power to buy all of this land. Some were okay with it because if they got it they would get New Orleans which was a major seapport that could help the US economy. They wanted to create a bigger country and expand also. -
Embargo Act
This was where the US decided to stop trading with other nations but in the process hurt their own economy. They did this in order to get Britain and France to stop restricing American trade like they were doing at the time. This was initated by Thomas Jefferson, president at the time. -
Period: to
War of 1812
The British started impressment to the US. This is where they would take sailors off of US ships and force them to join the British Navvy. This rightfully made many Americans mad and they started the war of 1812. This was fought in both America and Canada. This war was ended by the signing of the treaty of Ghent. -
Treaty of Ghent Signed
This ended the war of 1812. In this treaty Britian gave up the Northwest territory and both countries (US and Britian) decided to work towards ending the slave trade. This was not quickly spread news and even after this treaty was signed there was still a battle because they thought the war was still going. -
Monroe Doctrine
This is where President Monroe told everyone that the Western Hemispere was taken and that ayone trying to take it would be seen as a threat.
