    Involved: The US, Philippines, Cuba, and Spain
    America helping Cuba gain independence from Spain.
    They did this for financial reasons(sugar cane fields), and the US gained the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Gwam
  • Annexing of Hawaii

    Annexing of Hawaii
    Involved: Hawaii and The US
    The US annexed Hawaii as a territory in 1898.
    Many settlers developed sugar cane plantations and pineapple fields there once it was considered one of The US' territories.
  • Sinking of The U.S.S. Maine

    Sinking of The U.S.S. Maine
    Involved: The US and Spain
    There was an explosion on the U.S.S. Maine, and the blame was put right on Spain because the U.S. had problems with them already.
    The US used this to their advantage, putting as headlines on newspapers, no one really knew what caused the explosion but this caused nationalists of America to want to fight back.

    Involved: China and The U.S.
    The policy that gavr equal trading rights to all foreign nations in China.
    This was used to open asian markets to US businesses
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    Person involved: Theodore Roosevelt
    Statements by Theodore Roosevelt that were an addition to the Monroe doctrine - European efforts to colonize or interfere in the North or South America would be viewed as aggression
    This banned European countries from using force to collect debt in Latin America.
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Started by: Gavrilo Princip of Serbia
    Because of European Alliances war broke out on August 1, 1914.
    Cause Central powers to join together and Allied powers to join together and fight, but the US was not involved at this point.
  • Start of WWI

    People involved: Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire, Serbia, Russia, Italy, Great Britain, France (and eventually the US)
    WWI started because of the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
    At this point The US got a little more involved by giving weapons to Great Britain and France so Germany could lose.

    A canal built by the US to make travel time between then east and west coast decrease.
    Allowed The US to trade more easily and to more nations, this meant more power.

    Involved: Great Britain and Germany
    The British passsanger ship, The Lusitania, was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat killing more than 120 Americans.
    This upset The US citizens, they thought the US should join the war at this point, because of nationalism, but The US wanted to wait.
  • Sussex Pledge

    Involved: Germany and The U.S.
    A pledge issued by Germany stating that they promised not tosin anymore merchant ships without warning. They did this because they did not want the US to enter the war.
    The US was cool with this pledge and still decided to remain neutral as long as Germany kept their promise. Did they?
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Involved: Germany, Mexico, Great Britain, The U.S.
    Germany did not plan on keeping their promise, and Great Britain exposed them before it was too late. Germany had plan to team up with Mexico to attack the US in exchange for the territory that they lost in the Mexican American War. (TX, NM, AZ)
    The US had enough at this point and decided to join the war.

    The U.S. could no longer allowed to be stepped over by Germany. After they kept sinking our submarines.

    This act gave the government the eact to punish anyone who interfered with foreign relations, in other words they punished anyone who was a spy for another country.

    Involved: Woodrow Wilson and American Congress
    This was the first outlined speech WIlson gave to the American Congress. It wanted to started a peace program to prevent another world war from happening.
    The League of Nations was created, a peace keeping organization that wanted to give countries political and territorial rights.
  • The Battle of Argonne Forest

    Involved: The U.S., France, Great Britain, and Germany
    This battle was fought in Argonne Forest along the Meuse river in France. Allied Powers used everything to defeat the french. (planes, machine guns, tanks) Many germans died from these causes, also a lot of deaths were because of the spread of influenza.
    Because of this Germans retreated causing WWI to end.

    The US defeated Germany.
    Germany's Consequences: take total blame, 300 billion in reparations, military downsized and navy was eliminated

    This encouraged U.S. banks to invest, give loans, to Caribbean countries.
    This helped the U.S. gain more land which meant more power.
