    Benjamin Thompson Contributes to FACS
    Benjamin Thompson served in the military. He became fascinated with gun powered, and how it heated up. He discovers that that quality of heat was equal to the motional energy, and he became the first scientist to measure the mechanical equivalent of heat (MEH). He continued studying heat, and the insulation of objects. Later on, Thompson was able to contribute to FACS by designing the Rumford photometer, thermal underwear, improved fireplaces, kitchen range, drip coffee pot, and double boiler.
  • Catharine Beecher Contributes to FACS

    Catharine Beecher Contributes to FACS
    Catharine Beecher was an American Educator and an author. She wrote 33 books that will contribute to Family and Consumer Science. Her first book was A Treatise on Domestic Economy, and it was published in 1841. The Treatise book stated standards and values for domestic economy.

    Justin Smith Morrill Act
    The Justin Smith Morrill Act is name after the Vermont Congressman Justin Smith Morrill. The purpose of the Act is to provide grants of land to states to build their institutions/colleges that specializes in agriculture and mechanic arts. This is known as the Land-Grant College Act.

    Ellen Richards

    Ellen Richards was a young lady that attended schools to receive an education that was pass the eighth grade. In 1868, Richard attend the Vassar College were she graduated with an A.B.. She continued to Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) as the first woman to be accepted into this institution. Richards graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1876. That same year Vassar College accepted Richards Master's Thesis. Richards remained at MIT for 2 more years for graduate school.

    Land Grant Univiersities in Arkansas
    The University of Arkansas Systems are the Land Grant Universities in Arkansas. In 1871, The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville was the first university that was built on the Land Grant. Now there are "two regional universities serving southern and western Arkansas; five community colleges; two schools of law; a presidential school; a residential math and science high school; a 100 percent-online university and divisions of agriculture, archeology and criminal justice."
  • Women's Chemistry Laboratory

    Women's Chemistry Laboratory
    Ellen Richard proceed to the MIT School board, and convinced them to let her open up a Women's Chemistry Laboratory School for women. The board approved it, but they provided limitations. The school only provided the building, and told Richard that she have to purchase the equipment on her own. Richard proceeded to get funds to purchased the equipment from outside sources.

    The first domestic science class was introduced into the school system in Boston. In this same year New York introduced their first domestic science class as well. This is the start of domestic science classes in the school districts, and this is how it will formed into a great program in the future.
  • The New England Kitchen

    The New England Kitchen
    The New England Kitchen was opened up in 1890 by Ellen Richard. She was providing nutrition meals to people on a low cost, and teaching others how to do the same thing by demonstrating it to them. The New England Kitchen ends up failing, but later on provides nutrition school lunches to the children in Boston.

    Ellen Richards opens up her first restaurant. She provided the costumers with the nutrition value and the price of each portion of her food.
  • Chicago's World Fair of 1893

    Chicago's World Fair of 1893
    Ellen Richard provide nutrition food at the Chicago's World Fair. It listed the nutrition value of each food portion. This also led to the Rumford Kitchen and First School Lunches that happens after this event.
  • First School Lunch Program

    First School Lunch Program
    The first school lunch program was designed by Ellen Richard. She was able to get Boston committee to agree to allow The New England Kitchen, and herself to come in to provide the children with healthy lunches. This led to other schools, institutions, and programs to reach out to Richards regarding nutrition and food for their schools. Her program led a foundation of accepting school lunches for the whole nation.

    W.O. Atwater's Contributes to FACS
    W.O. Atwater is known as the Father of Nutrition. He was the first person to study calorie counting. He was able to declare how to find out how many calories are in a portion of food. Also, He was the first person to receive federal funding in the United States, and it was 10,000 dollars to proceed with his studies.
  • AHEA Founded

    American Home Economics Association (AHEA) was founded. The organization was founded by Ellen Richards, and the organization was created at the first Domestic Science Conference at the Lake Placid in New York. The organization purpose was to improve the quality and standards of individuals and family life.
  • Domestic Science Conference

    Domestic Science Conference
    Ellen Richard formed a summer conference for all the women working in the Domestic Science field to gather at Lake Placid, New York. During this conference, she would established standards, course outlines, biographies, and women club's study guides. This provided the opportunity for the name to be change from Domestic Science to Home Economics.
  • Caroline Hunt Contributes to FACS

    Caroline Hunt Contributes to FACS
    Caroline Hunt was the first Home Economic professor at the University of Wisconsin. Her vision of a Home Economic program becoming a general and interdisciplinary education which would play out after her time. Hunt performed two studies that reflects FACS that were published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She was passionate about how Home Economics need to teach students how to consume ethically.
  • Smith Lever Act

    The Smith Lever Act is a national Cooperation Extension Services. It provides the Land Grant Universities the advanced outreach programs that will educate the rural areas of agriculture practices and technologies.
  • Smith Hughes Act

    The Smith Hughes Act was formally known as the National Vocational Educational Act. It provides funding for the agriculture, home economics, and industrial trades.
  • Home Economic Classes added to Land Grant Universities

    Home Economic Classes were added to all Land-Grant Universities. Also, this is the first time that the universities encouraged men and women to take Home Economic classes.
  • Vocational Education Act of 1963

    Vocational Education Act of 1963, provided grants to schools to improve vocational-technical education programs.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1968

    Vocational Amendment of 1968 addressed secondary students. It was the first legislation bill that funded the students for specific populations.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1973

    Vocational Amendment of 1973 was put in place to stop the discrimination against the students with disabilities, referring to handicaps.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1976

    Vocational Amendment of 1976 was put in place to eliminate the sex discrimination and bias in the vocational-technical programs.
  • Carl Perkins Act

    Carl Perkins Act is to increase the quality of technical education in the United States by providing individuals with the skills and academic-knowledge required to become successful in the economy. It was established in 1984, and has been revised in 1998, 2006, and 2018.
  • American Home Economics Association named changes.

    American Home Economics Association named changes.
    American Home Economics Association name changes to American Association of Family and Consumer Science. This changed happened after Home Economics was changed to Family and Consumer Science. The organziation is a profession that represents members from FCS practices and content areas.
