Federation events

  • 24th October 1889

    Henry Parkes wanted all the colonies to federate. He stated that he was ready to federate. Some citizens did not want all the colonies to unite because the smaller colonies were afraid they would get taken over by larger colonies. They also thought that they were more intimidating alone. The other premiers said they would all meet informally for a conference in 1890.
  • 6-14th February 1890

    The Australasian conference was held in Melbourne. The premiers all agreed that Australia’s population and wealth had a significant high rise. They talked over and considered a few rules that are fair to everyone and that everyone liked so they can have a convention
  • 1891-94

    Many people got economic depression which means that the colonial parliaments aren’t interested in the idea of federation and don’t think it is important. The colonial parliaments are too busy to do anything or just simply don’t care and can’t be bothered to do anything about federation.
  • March/April 1891

    The first convention was held in Sydney and 7 representatives from every colony and 3 from NZ agreed to have the name ‘commonwealth of Australia’. They drafted a constitution. Sir Samuel Griffith, Clark and Kingston are the members of the constitutional committee and they worked on the constitution. The conference adopted the constitution on 9th of April.

    The Australian colonies were given power to change different duties.
  • 29th January 1895

    The conference for Hobart premiers enabled the Corowa Plan to be realised and constitution to be adopted. Most premiers agreed for legislation to be enabled for the election of convention. The Federal Council (the people in charge of federation) met in Hobart which was critical for the ‘Premiers Plan’ and adopted a resolution to re-commit the 1891 federal bill.
  • March 1896

    In Sydney the intercolonial conference was held. There was an agreement to extend the rule of restricted immigration to virtually all coloured races. This means that the rule of the immigration for different coloured people was being extended.

    The National Australasian Convention meets for the second time. They met in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne and they agreed to constitution. Representatives from five colonies (except Qld). Kingston, the SA premier, was elected president.
  • 23 April 1897

    The commonwealth constitution bill was adopted
  • 1898

    The anti-Asian immigration legislation was introduced to NSW, which was the model for the commonwealth ‘immigration restriction bill’.
