Fidel Castro Timeline

  • Birth

    Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 near Biran, Cuba His parents were Angel Maria Castro and Lina Ruz Gonzalez. His father was a wealthy sugar plantation owner from Spain.
  • Mexico

    In 1955 Castro was released from prison. He fled to Mexico where he met up with the Argentinian rebel Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Here they continued to plan the revolution.
  • Granma

    On December 2, 1956, Castro returned to Cuba aboard the ship Granma. With 80 insurgents and a cache of weapons they landed near the eastern city of Manzanillo. Where Batista's men killed or captured most of the attackers. Castro, Raul, and Guevara were able to survive.
  • University of Havana

    In 1942 Castro went to the University of Havana. There his political activity increased. He made his first political speech there and led revolts. At the University of Havana he got politically recognized and had become Cuba's revolutionary.
  • Arrested

    On July 26, 1953 Castro and 150 of his supporters attacked the military barracks in Monacada outside of Santiago de Cuba. The attack failed and Castro and others, including his brother Raul, were tried and convicted to a 15 year sentence. However Castro and his Brother were released in 1955.
