    Independence for Haiti- chapter 27
    -When French Revolution brok out, Haiti wanted to be independent because it was ruled by the French.
    -Thousands of slaves revolted in 1791
    -Violence and battles continued for 13 years between the slaves and the French
    -Many people were now horified by what happened, the fights took a terrible toll.
  • The Monroe Doctrine- chapter 27

    The Monroe Doctrine- chapter 27
    -The British asked the US for help so if they ever came to a battle with Latin America that the US would have their back
    -James Monroe created a policy that stated, any country that has independence and maintained it, should and will not be harmed by any European intervention.
    -This freed Latin American countries from threat of reconquest.

    The Triple Alliance- chapter 28
    -The goal of the triple alliance was to isolate france so it could not take revenge on Germany
    -this alliance was made to build up military power and combine with allies to prepare incase a war broke out
    -This allaiance included Bismark, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Germany also made a secret alliance with russia but Russia and Austria-Hungry ended up having rivalry
    -The Reinsurance treaty of 1887 fixed the rivalry after that

    -Americans sent a ship to cuba to save their citizens and property from the battles about to come. But it mysteriously exploded on its journey.
    -Spanish declared war
    -US quickly won battles in Carribean and Pacific
    -prace treaty was signed by spanish, giving US spanish land
    -2 naval stations were then built in cuba and limits put on cubans ability to borrow from foreign powers

    -Reinsurance treaty with Russia and Austria-Hungary lapsed
    -France now took Russia to involve in their alliance, Russia accepted because of their hatred for Austria-Hungary
    -This alliance said if either of the countries were threatened, the other would aid
    -Britain joined in 1904
    -this alliance became very dangerous because 1 minor incedent could lead to a general war

    -This revolution was caused by their assault in Ukrain
    -The assault led to food shortages and unhappy and poor pople.\
    -Bread riots began the revolution because of all the commotion being caused
    -Government wanted to continue the war
    -In october 1917, a report was claimed by an officer that the russian army was now "immense, desperate, and a weary crowd of men united by their common desire for peace."

    -bolsheviks were renamed communists in March 1918
    -anti-bolsheviks forces in russia were continuing to try and overthrow the new government
    -communists were called the "reds"
    -therre were 18 rival groups seeking to get rid communists
    -they were almost defeated in 1919 but the "reds" got the peasents to side with them and claimed that if the whites lost, the land reform would be lifted.
    -in 1921, the communists efforts paid off and the whites were defeated

    -In the early 1920's Mussolini's followers would rome around the streets of italian cities in black shirts beating communists and socialists.
    -They kicked all socialists and communists out of Milan, Bologna
    -Mussolini announced that in October 1922 he would lead the "March on Rome"
    - he did this to scare off the government so they would back down
    -this worked, later that day the king announced him as prim minister.

    -Before the war, women had few rights
    -After the war, women were able to vote, run in office, wear makeup, and even their styles changed too.
    -During the war, many women were provided jobs to take over mens places while they were off fighting
    -the number of women working decreased when the war was over but was still a higher number then it was in 1914
    -they gained more political/economic rights, earned their own money and indeppendence, and also changed their style to shorter hair and skirts

    -Stalin and his countries industry was much less advanced compared to other countries.
    -he made a 5 year plan claiming the soviet union would industrialize in every way needed in the next 5 years.
    -In this time he built steel mills, electric power stations, chemical/cement plants, and oil refineries.
    -from 1928-1940 the plan was moving along quite impressivley
    -Although this is what the soviet union needed, it took many sacrifices

    -Jobs were now being made easier because of the new technology being made.
    -Food was canned and now ready to cook, making it easier for women to make dinners, irons and vaccums were also created
    -by 1919 airplanes were made to fly mail from country to country and by 1930, the first airline service for people was made and in use.
    -by 1938, 2 million people had registered their automobiles and were using them
    -this advanced society still to this day

    -Africa believed their time at war would be giving them political freedom.
    -They tried to oppose colonial rule while Europeans tried to gain African territory
    -Nationalists tried to fight the french control against them
    -British rule upon africa affected the traditional culture of africa
    -This led to arguments and battles only to end with european powers ruling major parts in Africa

    -there was much unrest in the country that caused this war
    -political, social, and economic unrest
    -July 1936 a group of generals led by Fransisco Franco caused an uprisig against the republican government
    -the group was looking for a fascist state.
    -Italy and Germany both joined the war after this
    -It ended in 1939 with the victory of the nationalist fascist party

    -massive group led by hitler
    -they were majorly against jews
    -imposed heavy taxes on the french
    -sent many people to factories as slaves
    -persecuted jews in their occupied areas and sent others to concentration camps
    -left the jewish race scarece in Germany
    -devestating aftermath for those that survived it all

    -Japan attacked china so the US decided to drop the commercial treaty they had with Japan
    -Japan became very upset and on December 7, 1941, Japanese planes flew over an american naval base bombing and raiding for 2 hours
    -roosevelt declared war the next day
    -germany and italy which were japans allies joined the war against the US
    -Japan rose to victory and took much of the land that belonged to the US

    The Marshall Plan- chapter 32
    -Europe was in the middle of war against communists and non-communists and the US responded to the threat
    -Many people were suffering from hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos
    -Marshall created a plan to help those in need in the european countries
    -between 948 and 1952, 13$ billion was poured into helping the western european countries.
    -this boosted economics and political conditions
  • Korean war- chapter 32

    -korea was seprated into two parts, the US had the southern part and the soviet unione had the Northern part
    -Soviet sent north korean troops into the south and this caused war for 3 years.
    -finally a cease-fire treaty was signed in July 1953
    -the boundry between north and south korea was restored

    -Algerian nationalists wanted independence but french settlers in algeria opposed
    -war broke out
    -this led to the downfall of the fourth republic
    -france then turned to charles de gaulle to save france
    -he ended up stabilizing france and recognizing algerias independence
    -this caused resentment with western allies
