First Flight
The Wright Brothers invented the first heavier-than-air flight which traveled one hundred twenty feet in twelve seconds. The two brothers took turns flying that day with the fourth and last flight covering 850 feet in 59 seconds. This helped the world know how to fly and make further advancements in flight. -
First liquid fueled rocket
The first flight of a liquid-propellant rocket took place on March 16, 1926 at Auburn, Massachusetts, when American professor Dr. Robert H. Goddard launched a vehicle using liquid oxygen and gasoline as propellants. This helped scientists know how rockets work and led to space exploration. -
Amelia Earheart
Amelia Earhart is the first woman to fly a solo non-stop trans-Atlantic flight. This helped women know they could be just as great or greater than men. -
first jet engine
Dr. Hans von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle are both recognized as being the co-inventors of the jet engine. Each worked separately and knew nothing of the other's work. Hans von Ohain is considered the designer of the first operational turbojet engine. Frank Whittle was the first to register a patent for the turbojet engine in 1930. Hans von Ohain was granted a patent for his turbojet engine in 1936. This was a big achievement in science because it allowed planes to move way faster. -

Charles E. Yeager pilots Bell X-1--the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. This was significant because it could be used for many purpose including military. -

John H. Glenn, Jr., is the first American to orbit the earth. This let astronauts know how it is like in space and helped them prepare for future missions. -
man on moon
U.S. astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., are the first to walk on the moon. This was a very big advancement for mankind because they were seeing something outside their world. -

First crew arrives to take up residence in the International Space Station. This allowed people to acually live in space.
