    North Korea invades South Korea
    Communist North Korea invades South Korea, thus marking the beginning of the Korean War. Because of fear of of commuimist spreading, President Truman sends troops into battle without getting approval by Congress. The UN Security Council condemned the attack and demanded an immediate withdrawal.
  • 22nd Amendment Ratified

    22nd Amendment Ratified
    Due to the Great Depression and WW II occuring durint the 8 terms under FDR, America decided it was best to not have presidents serve for more than two terms. Thus the 22nd Amendment was passed on March 21, 1947 by Congress, and was ratified by the states in 1951. It limited the President of the United States to serve for only two terms.

    The Cuban Missle Crisis (October 22-November 20) was a conflcit involving nuclear weapons between the Soviet Union and the United States. It was the closest we have ever been to nucelar war. JFK made a national speech to address the Cuban Missle Crisis (JFK Cuban Missle Crisis Speech) He addresed the public about the Russian installations of nuclear weapons in Cuba and how we had demanded a naval blockade.

    Martin Luther King Jr. makes his ' I Have A Dream Speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. MLK gave this spech at the end of the March on Washington. MLK, a civil rights leader, calls for an end to racism in the United States. This speech was an important event in the American Civil Rights movement.

    The Miranda v. Arizona was a case in which Ernesto Miranda was not informed about his rights before police interogation. This court case lead to the Supreme Court creating the Miranda rule which states that a suspect has to be read his rights prior to police interrogation. These rights conist of " right to remain silent',' anything said can and will be used against said person', and ' right to an attorney'.

    President Carter signs treaty that gives Panama control of the Panama Canal. This treaty ended the previous agreement between Panama and Theodore Roosevelt that allowed the US to build the canal and control five miles of land along the canal. On December 31, 1999, Panama peacefully gained control of the Panama Canal.

    Sandra Day O'Connor becomes First Woman on Supreme Court
    Nominated by Ronald Reagan and given 91 votes by the Senate, Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first woman to be sworn as a Supreme Court Justice. She often casted a 'swing vote' on the court. She dealt with issues such as abortion, affirmative action, death penatlty and religion freedom.

    The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) is a 1987 agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union. Reagan and Gorbachev sign INF treaty, and it becomes the first arms-control agreement to reduce the superpowers' nuclear weapons. The Treaty entered into force upon the exchange of instruments of ratification in Moscow on June 1, 1988.
