    Legal Settlements & Apologies
Police and federal agents in Chandler spend 5 days rounding up possible illegal immigrants. They make 340 arrests, some of which are legal residents. They had to spend $500,000 in legal settlements and years of apologizing for this mistake. • National Guard

    National Guard
Arizona ranchers call on the National Guard to come and suppress an "invasion" on the border. Their efforts did not go far and lead to minimal action, such as a few lawmakers reading a proclamation about border violations. This contributed to where we are today because it made our citizens feel like they weren't being heard when they asked for minimal help and now bigger actions have occured.
  • Bilingual Education

    Bilingual Education
Bilingual education in banned when voters promote English immersion/ The bill passes 63% to 37%. This contributed to where we are today because now Spanish is not allowed to be spoken in the classroom. This can deter families from coming here to educate their children.

  • Secure Fence Act

    Secure Fence Act
President George W. Bush signed a bill proposing a fence/wall be built separting Mexico from the U.S.. He signed the bill after CNN reported that a majority of Americans would prefer to increase the number of border patrolmen instead of the erection of this fence. In 2012 the fence had cost $6 billion, $.4 billion over budget. This contributed to where we are because it has made it very clear that we do not want people coming here illegally.
  • The Tri-fecta

    The Tri-fecta
Three ballot measures: out-of-state tuition from AZ residents who cannot prove citizenship, denying bail to illegal immigrants, and making English Arizona's official language, were all passed with 70% of the vote. This contributed to where we are because we now have things like the Dream Act that help counteract it, but also, this helped enforce no bilingual education.
  • Illegal to Hire Undocumented Immigrants

    Illegal to Hire Undocumented Immigrants
Legislature approves a bill that will fine employers if they are found to have hired illegal immigrants. The bill had bipartisan support and was signed by Napolitano. This contributed to where we are because it can deter people from coming here if their chances of getting hired are slim to none.
  • Nick Erfle

  • Sheriff Joe Arpaio

  • SB 1070

    SB 1070
SB 1070, an extremely controversial proposition, is signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer. SB 1070 is part of the anti-immigration movement in Arizona and requires Police Officers to determine whether or not someone is here illegally with "reasonable suspicion." This contributed to where we are because it basically told the world that we are "almost okay" with racially profiling if it will ensure that we do not have undocumented immigrants here.
