Born in London on 18 April 1817, Lewes because a well known English biographer, a literacy critic, dramatist, novelist, philosopher, actor, scientist, and an editor.By 1838 he had moved to Germany with a poorly planned education plan, to only later return in 1840 to London. By 1841 he married, and him and his wife lived with a friend named Thornton Leigh Hunt. By 1851 Lewes wife had gave birth to her 2nd child, to find it was actually the child of Thornton.

Lewes couldn't divorce his wife because he condoned the adultery but in the same year he met Mary Ann Evans for which he spent the rest of his life with. In 1855 Lewes published Life and Works of Goethe, 2 vol. to this day is still to be a great introduction to the poet. A well rounded writer and thinker in many fields, contributed allot to the development of empirical metaphysics. his treatment of mental phenomena as related to social conditions was an advance in psychological thought.
